Introduction/Warm Up
-

Change for PE (5min)

Normal Class Dynamic Warm-up (5min)
Ensure that students do lunge, skipping, shuffle, and
chasse step (front/back, side/side).
Mirroring with Chasse Step
Divide students into pairs (Make groups of three if
necessary).
Demonstrate to students how to mirror each other through
using the chasse step.
Partners number themselves 1 and 2 and find a space in the
gym

Badminton Warm-up: Shuttlecock Keep-Up

Divide students into pairs used in previous lesson (Make
groups of three if necessary).
Partners number themselves 1 and 2; #1 stays in their space
in the gym and #2 gets two cones and a shuttle.
Toss birdie to partner, getting them to move away from the
cone, getting back into ready position to receive the next
pass.
See how many consecutive passes partners can get.

Learning Activities/Teaching Strategies

- Skill: Footwork (7-8 min)

Assessment/Evaluation/Comments

Have students use partners from previous activity.

Have one partner go on one side of the net and the other
partner to go on the other side of the net, lining up on the
serving line.
One partner will hit the birdie over the net to their partner
making their partner move to a variety of areas of the court;
remembering that singles lines are long and narrow.
The other partner receiving the pass has to move to the
different areas of the court to hit the birdie back to their
partner.
o Can use: chasse step to move to where the birdie is
going to.
Partner who hits the birdie back needs to return to base
each time they hit a shot over the net.
The key is to not let it hit the ground and to always return
to your base each time after a shot is made.
Hit the birdie back and forth 10 times and switch positions.
Emphasis on forehand and back hand shots learnt in the
previous class. Discourage students to stay away from
using overhead shot.

Net Shot- Lunge Step (7-8 min)

Only other step needed in Badminton other than the chasse
step.
Net shot is the shot that is done closest to the net.
o Used like the forehand to pop the birdie over the net

Mirror what your partner

is doing
Make sure the leader is
facing the net

Make sure to go back to

home base each time
Consecutive hits in a row
with partner

Make sure to go back to

home base each time
Use the chasse step to
move to where the birdie
is- not a gallop or shuffle
step

Emphasis on lunging
forward with the same
foot as the hand the
racquet is in
Have a straight arm to pop

the birdie up

In partners, one partner will throw the birdie like a dark (as
done in previous drill) to have it drop close to the net.
The other partner will lunge forward to hit the birdie back
over the net
Continue to do this 10 times and switch.
With grade 7s, take another big step back from the white
line towards the net
o Now still using the net shot, take a few quick running
steps towards the net and then lunge to get the shot.
o Taking too many lunge steps will take too long.

Game: Royalminton (15-20 minutes)

To increase student participation, create two Royalminton
(also called Kingminton or Queenminton) courts by
dividing a Badminton court in half using the centre line.
Students play Badminton on the narrow Royalminton court
using a King of the Court system (winning player stays
on the court to face the next opponent).
Royalminton games are played to 3 points.
Students score 2 points by sending the shuttle either
between the net and the short service line, or by sending
the shuttle between the two long service lines (the red
shaded areas on the diagram).
Students score 1 point by sending the shuttle between the
short service line and the long service line for doubles (the
blue shaded areas on the diagram).
Switch games every 2 minutes
8 Courts
o Explain areas of play for courts
o Dont worry about using points system
Variations and Progressions:
o Modify the equipment (e.g. different sized racquets,
lower nets, etc)
o Modify space (e.g. have students play singles or
doubles on a full-sized Badminton court)
o Modify the scoring system (e.g. 3 points for the area
between the net and the short service line to put
emphasis on dropshots or netshots)

Closure/Cool Down

Safety Considerations
- Remind students the safety
rules associated to having
multiple Badminton games
occurring in the gym (e.g. do
not cross someones court)
- Be careful of others playing
around you; birdies may fall
into your playing area

Basic Skills: Locomoter e.g., walking, running, hopping, leaping, rolling, skipping
galloping, climbing, sliding, propulsion through water
Nonlocomotor e.g., turning, twisting, swinging, balancing, bending, landing,
