a) In the Softball tournament, identify and evaluate communication strategies that

allowed you to play the game as a team as best you can (1 page maximum).
It is always essential to present good communication skills during your performance in sports or
any other real life context. For groups to function effectively, students must have the ability to
communicate to one another at all times. Students can gain many of these skills by social
interactions and maybe even practice.
During the three P.E lessons of playing Softball, I believe I did demonstrate most of the
communication skills required for performing well as a group. For me to be able to function
successfully in a group that was of mixed abilities, I used the skills below:
#1 Being Open to the group members:
The first strategy I used was being open to all my group members. Not all the members in my
group have worked with me in other things together. So by being open, I was willing to get to
know one another particularly those with different personalities and abilities. This definitely
helped in my overall performance because as soon as I got to know all the group members I was
more confident in playing.
#2 Explaining Constructive Ideas Clearly to the group members:
Another strategy I used throughout the performance in softball was explaining my ideas and
thoughts verbally with my group. However, I would try and always communicate constructive
ideas that relate to softball. Though I did not choose the group, I was able to work with them
well as I kept communicating with them, asked them questions and answered them as well. A vital
part of communicating in groups is to get your message across in a polite and constructive
manner. By talking to each other we can also ensure that there are no disagreements in the
group. If there are then we can sort it by talking to one another. Even if you do not agree with
one of the ideas, clearly justify why it is not a good one and maybe suggest some instead of just
arguing about it. This was a method I used to get my points across the group.
#3 Listening actively:
An important part of communication is listening carefully to others as well. Since there were
some students who were experts in softball, I asked them any doubts I had and asked for
suggestions. This helped my own performance and ability in the sport.
#4 Positive talks, Supporting and encouraging team mates:
The main strategy I used during these 3 lessons was to communicate with group members
positively, supporting them and encouraging them. This not only helped my team members play
well, but in someway had an effect on the whole groups atmosphere. Even when I did not play to
my level best at some points of the game, I stayed positive and my group members encouraged
me by saying, You can do it next time, its alright! These brought my confidence up again.
In conclusion, communication skills are one of the most important skills needed to perform
successfully in any sport and in this case it is softball.

b) Now that you have completed your evaluation, set a goal that you feel would help
th
your team if you were to have a 4 class of play (No more than 1 paragraph).Note
this goal should relate to your evaluation.
Personal Goal in Softball: Being more open to my group members in terms of
communication

I believe that one of the most important goals I needed to work on was being more open to my
group members in communicating my ideas. Basically, most of my group members were students
who I had not worked with before a lot. We were in mixed gender groups, which meant that
there were students with all different performance abilities. So, one of my challenges from
Class 1 was to be able to talk to them openly and confidently as I was always hesitant about
asking them questions or giving them my opinion since some of my team mates were very good in
the game. Sometimes I would not give my input, as I would think it would be wrong. Therefore, if
there was another class of Softball, I would openly communicate my ideas with them, listen to
them carefully and not be shy to ask questions if I have any. This would definitely have a huge
impact on the progression and success of my team in terms of working together and playing the
game. If everyone in my group openly shares their ideas it would probably spread a positive
atmosphere as everyones ideas would be heard and nobody would feel neglected. Additionally,
more communication would lead to keeping all the teammates informed thus preventing surprises
or any disagreements. A positive atmosphere within the group always promotes success. Hence, if
I start taking the initiative of discussing my ideas with my teammates more often, then there
would be more agreements within us and will definitely bring success to our whole team in
Softball.
