Name: Angela Brown
Subject Area: Math
Grade: 4
Lesson Title: Multiplication

Brief lesson description

The teacher will teach a review of multiplication by asking students open-ended questions and questions
designed to review the different strategies used. using pictures, and drills with Smart Board software in order
to assess how their fluency is with multiplication and to engage them in the process. The teacher will begin by
opening up a blank Smart Board page and briefly writing an equation on the board and having them call out
the answer. Then to boost their confidence for the game, tell them that you think they are ready to begin the
Smart Board Multiplication Game. If they are done, they can go online and play a game of their choosing to
advance their skills on http://www.multiplication.com/games (a QR code will be posted if there are any iPads
available to use for the game or if a student has a smartphone)

Smart Board software
A projector
Smart Board markers, erasers, and remote
iPads or video cameras (if students have one encourage them to bring it in for their group to use)
Procedure
-The teacher will lay out the materials students will choose from when they make their video.
- The teacher will download a QR scanner application onto any iPads in the classroom so the student can
scan the QR code posted on a wall in the classroom to play a game on the internet that teaches them
multiplication. This game will be an add-on for those who want more practice or are done.
- Then create the Smart board game for the students to play after as a drill. Make a playlist on youtube of
songs your students like so you can play it while they work on the application in pairs. Establish what
questions you want to ask your students to activate their prior knowledge of multiplication strategies and in
terms of open-ended questions that makes them think about other ways, or why they like what they do to
determine their answers.
- The teacher will review multiplication strategies with students by asking them questions on how to figure out
a multiplication answer and ask for as many as they can think of
- Open-ended questions will be asked to find out how they relate multiplication to real life problems and if they
were able to use multiplication one day to help them solve something or how we can use it in everyday life
- Use Smart Board software to drill and give more practice time to students. Instructions are in the Smart
Board game. The groups formed for this, can be the same group as the groups who video taped together, as
long as they are getting along and focused.
ISTE 1 and 2
- Groups of 2-3 will then go into video taping their own multiplication approach and why they use it. Each
person will demonstrate something different!
- Have any iPads used stacked gently in a container to be stored on a shelf for safe keeping
- If there is not time to play the game, or some students seem interested in it as others may be done earlier,
give them the URL in which they can go home and ask their parents if they can practice on the home
computer.

Lesson Title: The Multiplication Game Show
Brief Lesson Description:
Students will review multiplication skills from the Smart Board and share their strategies by videotaping themselves to
share with the rest of the class at a later date.

-

Smart Board or other projection device with speakers and iTunes or other media player.
http://www.multiplication.com/games
Computers/iPads
Video camera (or iPad if possible)

Procedure:
Before the Lesson:
- Set out the materials students will choose from when they make their video.
- Download a QR scanner application onto any iPads in the classroom so the student can scan the QR code posted
on a wall in the classroom to play a game on the internet that teaches them multiplication.
- Create the Smart board game for the students to play after as a drill. Make a playlist on youtube of songs your
students like so you can play it while they work on the application in pairs. Establish what questions you want to
ask your students to activate their prior knowledge of multiplication strategies and in terms of open-ended
questions that makes them think about other ways, or why they like what they do to determine their answers.
After the Lesson:
- Have any iPads used stacked gently in a container to be stored on a shelf for safe keeping
- If there is not time to play the game, or some students seem interested in it as others may be done earlier, give them
the URL in which they can go home and ask their parents if they can practice on the home computer.

Activation of Prior Knowledge 10 minutes:

-

The teacher will ask the students what they do to help them figure out certain multiplication equations by writing
one down, asking how to do it, and showing an example of another one. Equations are random but be sure to
squeeze in some tricky ones like 9x or 7x.
Ask them what the rules are for 1x and 0x and how we know this
Ask students which strategy they prefer. Do they use mental math? Why?
Model an example of a strategy they have not done before (possibly learning 9x rules on fingers)
Ask students, when can we apply multiplication in real life? and write these answers down on a new blank Smart
Board screen

Learning Activity 45 minutes (15 min. instruction, 30 min. group work)

Using pictures and drills with Smart Board software will help assess
fluency within multiplication and engage them in the process.
The teacher will open up a blank Smart Board page and briefly write an
equation on the board
The teacher will instruct them to call out an answer. Then to boost their
confidence for the game, tell them that they seem ready to begin the
Smart Board Multiplication Game Show Challenge.
-Students will model, in groups of 2-3, a multiplication strategy of their
choice by working together to determine what equations they will
display, and what materials they will use. They will each model one
equation, while a group member takes a video of it with a video
camera/iPad. This way, all group members will have a turn at modeling
and being the cameraperson.
-Music will be played lowly from a playlist on youtube of their favourite
songs (this would have been something the teacher found out by use of
an exit slip in a previous class)
-If some students finish their video before others, they can play http://
www.multiplication.com/games on the computer or an iPad to test their knowledge further in some more ways. To
go to this game quickly, you will post a QR code that links to it for those who are able to use an iPad (depending
on availability in the school). The iPad will have the QR code scanner app already downloaded.

!
-

To boost their confidence after the discussion, exaggerate how they now seem more than ready to begin the
Smart Board Multiplication Game Show Challenge. The drills will be in the form of a Smart Board game called,
The Multiplication Game Show. This game is attached to the lesson plan with rules on how to teach and play it.
After they will all make their video (20-30min). They will view their videos after the teacher has compiled them into
a folder in the class computer.

Consolidation of Knowledge and Reflection 5-10 minutes:

- When the students are finished (or when the time is up), they put their materials away and re-convene as a class.
- The teacher leads a discussion about the activity: Did students enjoy the process? Did the review help restate
some strategies to math or help you learn new ones from your peers? Did group members have similar opinions
about the approaches, or was it difficult as you all like the same one? Was the technology easy to use? Would you
want to use technology to help review math again?
Homework (Further Learning)
- If students do not finish the group project, there will be time available for them to finish next class.
- As homework, students are asked to bring in a song of their choosing and present an analysis of it to small
groups of their peers tomorrow.

Assessment Method
Students will peer assess their teammates. This group assessment will be completed next class as some may need next
class to finish. A sample of the assessment is below. The Smart Board game is a tool to see how fast they can all recall the
times tables and the making of the video will give the teacher the ability to observe and compare what he/she sees in the
classroom to how the students assess each other. The Remind app will be used to let students, if they have a phone, and
parents safely know how they are doing once you are finished assessing. This works well in letting parents know of how
hard the students worked, and how they are doing.

A note on copyright issues (in terms of using music in the classroom):

As I may play music in the classroom while they are video taping, there are copyright issues to take into
account. However the Copyright Matters document by Wanda Noel states that sound recordings and musical
performances within an educational context are not subject to usual copyright protections.Any use of music
that can be considered in furtherance of an educational object is not subject to the payment for use. (17). She
also states that the playing of sound recordings is permitted if the following conditions are met:
must take place on the premises of an educational institution
must be for educational or training purposes
must not be for profit
must take place before an audience consisting primarily of students,
of the educational institution, instructors acting under its authority,
or any person who is directly responsible for setting curriculum
must not involve a "motive of gain" (9)
