Course Description:
Construction Specifications
Is a study of the basic principles of specification development and the interpretation of such. The
role of specifications as a legal and technical document will be discussed in terms of design and
constructions, as well as interrelationship of specifications, construction law, and materials of
construction.
3 credits: 3 lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: CONT 106 or equivalent experience.
Offered spring semesters only.
Course Objective:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
Organize, store, and retrieve information using uniform formats established by the construction industry.
List the Divisions of UniFormat and MasterFormat. Apply the concepts of SectionFormat and PageFormat
to properly generate a Specification Section. Explain why the use of standardized formats is critical for a
project to be successful. Compare the differences between Drawings and Specifications. Explain which
information belongs on Drawings and which on Specifications, and why. Analyze a Specification and
determine how it can be interpreted legally. Utilize the information contained in Construction Documents.
Required Materials:
Class material: Notebook, paper, pen, and pencil

Students will conduct themselves in a civil manner and adhere to the Code of Conduct in the web base

other students work.
ALL personal electronic devices are to be turned off during class and put away, and no usage of
the internet.
Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory for this class. If you must be absent, EMAIL ME PRIOR TO CLASS!
Attendance counts. An excused absence is an emergency such as a death in famil y, the advent of
religious holidays and/or participating in official College functions. Late students or students who leave
early may be marked absent.
Home Work: Reading assignments and occasional written assignments.
Grading Procedure: Final 35%, Mid-Term- 25%, Attendance- 5%, Quizzes 20%, Assignments
15%.

Construction Process Overview: Building team members and their relationships; Commissioning;
Construction process; Project phases; Facility Life Cycle; Integrated Project Delivery.
Session 2 Feb 10, 2015: Project Delivery, Codes, Programming, Cost and Schedule
Services; Factors Affecting Project Delivery; Project Delivery Methods and Services; Project Team.
