The

Beatitudes
Matthew 5:3-12
You will need to know the Beatitude and
the meaning (4th grade language.)

The Beatitudes

#1 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the


Kingdom of Heaven.

4th grade language: People who are poor in spirit

trust in God. They are humble and are happy


with what God has given them.
Father Jims teaching:(People who are poor in
spirit place all their trust in God. They know that
all they have---no matter how much or how
little---is from God.) A person who is not trying to
get more power, money, popularity, or control
than everyone else.

#2 Blessed are they who mourn for they will be


comforted.

4th grade language: People who mourn (who are sad

because they have lost someone) and who understand

other peoples sorrow, will be comforted in Heaven.


Father Jims teaching:(People who mourn are those
who have suffered a loss in their lives. They are
strong because they know God is always with them.
They comfort others and help those who are
suffering.) A person who can feel the pain and hurt of
others and cares about it.

#3 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the

land.
4th grade Language: People who are meek respect
everybody, theyre not bossy or knowitalls.
They want to learn what is right and good. Meek is
a lot like humble.

Father Jims teaching: (People who are meek are

considerate. They do not push their own wishes


on others. They treat others kindly and
respectfully.) A person who will let people talk to
him. A person who is willing to learn what is right
and good.

#4 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for

righteousness, for they will be satisfied.


4th grade Language: People who work to build the
kind of world God wants: where all people are kind
and loving to each other. They hunger and thirst: they
NEED righteousness like they need food and drink.
Father Jims teaching: (People who work to build the
kind of world God wants. They work so that everyone
is treated fairly and justly.) A person who wants to
live in a right way with God, with other people and
with the things of the earth.

#5 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be


shown mercy.
4th Grade Language: Merciful people forgive
others as they know God forgives them.

Father Jims teaching: (People who show

others mercy reach out and help people.


They see people as God sees them. They
are generous and kind. They forgive others
as they know God forgives them.)
A person who not only cares about the hurt
and pain of others, but who is willing to do
something to help.

#6 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they


will see God.

4th Grade Language: People who have a

clean heart place God above everyone and


everything else in their lives.

Father Jims teaching: (People who place God


above everyone and everything else in their
lives.) A person whose heart and desire is to
do what God asks.

#7 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will

be called children of God.


4th grade Language: A Peacemaker is a person
who tries to make peace between others, and
who tries to bring people together.
Father Jims Teaching: (People who work for
peace and solve problems without harming
anyone. They devote themselves to building
the kind of world in which all may live as
children of God.) A person who tries to make
peace between others, and who tries to bring
people together.

#8 Blessed are they who are persecuted

for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is


the kingdom of heaven.
4th Grade Language: Persecuted people
are people who are teased, bullied or hurt
for doing what God calls them to do.
Father Jims teaching: (When things are
the way God wants them to be, they are
right. People who work for
righteousness do what God wants, even
when it is difficult to do so.) A person who
is brave enough to suffer for doing what is
right and good and follow Jesus.
