Background
You have learned about the scientific method this year and engaged in scientific research. Over the
course of your education, you have studied various branches of science (biology, chemistry, geology, etc.)
and explored a wide variety of topics. As the end of sixth grade approaches, you will have the
opportunity to demonstrate all you have learned. You will select an area of personal interest and engage
in scientific inquiry and investigation.
Task
Working independently, you will select a topic of interest and create a question to investigate. You will
design and implement an experiment to answer your question and test your hypothesis. Gathering and
analyzing data will help you to draw a conclusion and answer your question. Your entire experiment will
be presented during our sixth grade science fair to be held mid-April.
Audience
Families, teachers and the entire student body will be invited to attend our science fair.
Purpose
This is science in action! You will be investigating a question and following the scientific method just as a
true scientist would. This is an opportunity to put together all you have learned over the years about
science, research and experimentation. It is also an occasion to study a topic that intrigues you while
practicing the essential skills of writing and presenting.
Procedure
1) Propose several questions that you would like to research, using the Science Fair Proposal Sheet.
2) Gain approval for your proposal from Ms. Teitelman.
3) Review the Science Fair Vocabulary.
4) Conduct research into your topic of interest.
5) Develop a hypothesis and complete the Hypothesis Approval Form get approval.
6) Design the experiment, data collection chart, and material list and write your Lab Report Draft.
7) Gather materials and conduct your experiment several trials.
8) Record data, create charts and graphs, and calculate mean, etc.
9) Analyze data and draw a conclusion.
10) Write up your Conclusion and an Abstract.
11) Type all aspects of your experiment, gather photos and artifacts, and assemble your project board.
12) Practice speaking about your experiment and answering questions.
13) Participate in the science fair and HAVE FUN!!
