Model 903 Fiber Multiplexer Boards (FMB) Upgrade

Model 903
June 20, 2008
PCN#0002

Description:
Several components used in the Model 903 Fiber Multiplexer Boards (FMBs) are now obsolete or otherwise
difficult to procure from reliable vendors. In particular, the key serializer/deserializer (SERDES) chip Agilent's
GLINK used on the FMBs is now obsolete. Furthermore, a general upgrade to the boards is required to
reduce cost, simplify assembly and test, and incorporate new technologies adopted in other product lines, such
as advanced ARM-based diagnostics (accessible via Ethernet) and the use of SFP transceivers.
The new replacement cards, designated FMB-X, allow for operation in two modes: GLINK operation for full
backwards compatibility with existing FMBs and non-GLINK operation, in which case an FPGA-based SERDES
is used for the optical link in lieu of the GLINK chip set. In both modes the FMB-X is fully compatible with
existing backplanes, video cards, and data cards used in Model 903 systems.
Products Affected:
All Fiber Multiplexer Boards (FMBs) with part numbers starting with 903-0010-, 903-0011-, 903-5004-, 9035005-, 903-5009-, 903-5010-, 903-5011-, 903-5012-, 903-5016-, 903-5017-, 903-5021-, 903-5022-, 903-5023-,
903-5024-00, 903-5041-, and 903-5046-. Cross-references to the replacement FMB-X card part numbers will
be supplied as they become available.
These FMB cards are typically carried as spares and/or installed in remote and console racks with part numbers
in the form 903-8XXX-XX.
Effectivity:
December 31, 2008
Customer Impact:
Moog has purchased an end-of-life supply of GLINK chips that, based on sales projections, will last until at least
December 31st, 2008. Cards listed above will be available for purchase orders submitted by the effectivity date
of this notification as either the original part number or a fully backwards-compatible FMB-X.
After the effectivity date, the availability of the original parts identified above and backwards compatibility of the
FMB-X cards cannot be assured, depending on remaining stock of the GLINK chips. Subsequently if any
GLINK based FMB needs to be changed, both remote and console FMB would need to be replaced by FMB-X
cards at the same time.
All affected 8000 series drawings and assembly BOMs may require revision or new numbers, per agreement
between Moog and the customer.
