Detail: I lesson per week

Outcomes

Assessment overview

Mathematics K-10
MA1-8NA creates, represents and continues a variety of patterns with numbers and objects
MA2-8NA generalises properties of odd and even numbers, generates number patterns, and

For: Assess ability to count by 2s, 5s and 10s.

As: Are students able to correctly identify and the number patterns and use hundreds chart to
check their answer.
Of: Are student able to identify the missing numbers in forwards and backwards number
patterns as well as identify the pattern rule.

completes simple number sentences by calculating missing values

MA1-2WM uses objects, diagrams and technology to explore mathematical problems

Stage 1 - Patterns and Algebra 1

Investigate and describe number patterns formed by skip
counting and patterns with objects (ACMNA018)
identify and describe patterns when skip counting
forwards or backwards by ones, twos, fives and tens
from any starting point
represent number patterns on number lines and number
charts
recognise, copy and continue given number patterns
that increase or decrease, eg
1, 2, 3, 4,
20, 18, 16, 14,
describe how number patterns are made and how
they can be continued (Communicating, Problem
Solving)
create, record and describe number patterns that
increase or decrease
recognise when an error occurs in a pattern and
explain what is wrong (Communicating, Problem
Solving)
Stage 1 - Patterns and Algebra 2
describe a number pattern in words, eg 'It goes up by
threes'
determine a missing number in a number pattern,
eg 3, 7, 11, __, 19, 23, 27
describe how the missing number in a number
pattern was determined (Communicating, Reasoning)

Lesson 1 - Forward Number Patterns

Modelled - Using a hundreds chart, model and describe how
forwards number patterns are created through skip counting
by 2's 5's and 10's. Focus on what is actually happening in the
pattern, ie. add on 2 each time.
Guided - Complete Forwards Number Patterns Activity on
Rainforest Maths as a Class and choose individual students to
investigate the next number in the pattern.
Independent - Provide students with laminated hundreds
charts. Students circle given numbers to investigate the
number pattern and identify the next number in the patterns.

Stage 2 - Also introduce patterns of 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s.

Lesson 2 - Backwards Number Patterns

Modelled - Using a hundreds chart, model and describe how
forwards number patterns are created through skip counting
by 2's 5's and 10's. Focus on what is actually happening in the
pattern, ie. taking away 2 each time.
Guided - Complete Backwards Number Patterns Activity on
Rainforest Maths as a Class and choose individual students to
investigate the next number in the pattern.
Independent - Provide students with laminated hundreds
charts. Students circle given numbers to investigate the
number pattern and identify the next number in the patterns.

Content
check solutions when determining missing numbers
in number patterns by repeating the process
(Reasoning)
Stage 2 - Patterns and Algebra 1
Describe, continue and create number patterns resulting from
performing addition or subtraction (ACMNA060)
identify and describe patterns when counting forwards
or backwards by threes, fours, sixes, sevens, eights and
nines from any starting point
model, describe and then record number patterns using
diagrams, words or symbols
ask questions about how number patterns have been
created and how they can be continued
(Communicating)
create and continue a variety of number patterns that
increase or decrease, and describe them in more than
one way

Teaching, learning and assessment

Resources

Stage 2 - Also introduce patterns of 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s.

Lesson 3 - Forwards and Backwards Number Patterns

Modelled - Demonstrate the investigation of number patterns
with missing numbers using a large hundreds chart. eg. 24,
26, ___, 30, 32, ___. Demonstrate how to describe the number
pattern
Guided - In pairs, students use a hundreds chart to
investigate number patterns and determine the missing
numbers then check their answers.
Independent - Students investigate number patterns with
missing numbers and records their answers. Students can also
record the rule of the number pattern, for example add 5 or
subtract 2.
