Composition of Soil
Experiment No. 3
Soil is a mixture of different materials found in the upper part of the earths layer. It is very important because it supports plant
life by supplying the plant with the necessary nutrients essential for growth and development. Soil takes hundred of years to form.

III. Materials
Soil sample (about cup), magnifying lens, bottle/jar with cover, water, stirring rod and ruler
IV. Procedure
A. Examine the soil using the magnifying lens. Touch the soil and feel its texture. Record your observation of the texture.
B. Pour water into the bottle until it is half-full. You may use a beaker as an alternative container. If the mouth of the bottle is
narrow, you may ask for a funnel to avoid water from spilling. Put a handful of soil into the bottle. What did you see? What
does this indicate? Record your observation.
C. Stir the mixture thoroughly. Let it settle for 10-15 minutes. Observe what happens.
D. Place your set up where it can not be disturbed and continue your observation for another week.
E. Measure the height of the layers of materials that where formed. Use the centimeter (cm) unit.
V. Data and Observations
A. Chart. Draw the set up at the start and at the end of the observation days. Write your observation properly and accurately.
