Timeline 1911-1927

1911: Fall of the Qing

Xinjiang and Tibet de-facto autonomy


Outer Mongolia becomes fully independent 1923

1912-27: Warlord era chaotic period of civil war between provinces

Western/Japanese colonialism still very active in treaty ports and supporting


various warlords
1919: the May 4th Movement in reaction to end of WWI

The Guomindang/Kuomintang aka KMT, GMD Nationalist Party established 1912 led
by Sun Yatsen
Chinese Communist Party (CCP): established in 1921
The First United Front 1923-27 (ends in CCP purge in Shanghai)
Anti-Japanese war 1937-1945 and Civil War 1945-49
1931: Japan invades Manchuria and creates Manchukuo
Second United Front: CCP and KMT in theory working together to fight Japan (19371945)
1938-1945: KMT move their government capital from Nanjing to the wartime capital
of Chungking in Sichuan province
1941: Japan attacks US. Hong Kong, Indonesia etc. bringing the US and European
allies into the war
1941-45: US military supports Chiang Kai-shek despite tension over strategies and
KMT corruption
1944: Dixie Mission goes to Yanan to investigate working w/ CCP
Aug. 1945: Atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrenders
1946: Take-back of Japanese occupied territories by KMT. Process is riddled by
corruption, mismanagement, apparent tolerance for Japanese collaborators and
leaders etc.
1945-1949: Civil War. CCP wins
1949: Chiang and KMT flee to Taiwan w/US aid
