Jacob Anthony Rota

Autobiography
Fall 2013

My name is Jacob Rota but people call me Jake. I am from Uxbridge,

Massachusetts. I am seventeen years old in my senior year of high school. I
attend Blackstone Valley Regional Technical Vocational High School in Upton,
MA. I am currently participating in the Information Technology shop. My
classes are Honors English, Honors Government, Honors Physics, and Music. I
strive for achievement in both my academic and vocational areas.
My signature character strengths are my creativity and my
appreciation of beauty and excellence. These strengths speak to who I am
because of my love of all sorts of art. I enjoy photography, painting, and
playing music. I play many instruments and I am an avid artist. I appreciate
beauty and excellence because I can understand the hard work and
determination that goes into a piece of artwork because of my experience in
art. Much of my life revolves around art.
My vocational field is Information Technology, which involves with
computer hardware and networking. I have completed the CompTIA A+
course and will soon be certified as a PC hardware technician. I am currently
studying my first semester of Cisco Networking. I am very competent in my
field, with many technical skills such as repairing computers, troubleshooting
networks, and low-level programming and web design. I have been able to

utilize my technical skills in many real life situations. IT was my first choice
coming into BVT, and I am glad I picked it.
I am currently taking the most challenging academic courses offered to
me. This is because I love to excel in my academic studies and I am able to
take difficult classes. My strongest subject would be science, and this year I
am taking chemistry. My subject that needs the most work is math, which
can sometimes be difficult for me. I also am very strong in Music and English,
both due to my creativity. Academics can be challenging at times, but it is
rewarding.
Outside of school, a large amount of my time is devoted to my
pursuance of the arts. I play mainly guitar, bass, piano and saxophone. I play
other instruments proficiently, but not to the degree that I have worked on
these instruments. Many of my friends share my interests, so I often will
hang out with them and play music. I play in a band with one of my closest
friends, and I spend a lot of time performing or watching bands play live. I
also spend a lot of time painting and drawing. The activities I do outside of
school are a strong representation of my signature strengths: Appreciation of
Beauty & Excellence and Creativity.
I work as an Office Manager for my familys photography company. I
plan to work as a sound engineer in the near future, which would be a great
bridge between music and technology. I am exploring jobs at local stadiums
and venues. Ive volunteered at flu clinics locally. I would like for my first

community service project to be cleaning out public places in an attempt to

draw more people. I believe in conservation of our environment, and that is
why I want to do my part in cleaning up the planet.
My academic goals are to take the most challenging courses. The
biggest obstacle is my motivation. I often times dont score as highly as I
would like to in my classes because of my lack of motivation. I frequently
have missed homework just because I am not motivated to do it. I am taking
steps to improve my mental well-being, including my motivation.
My goals are to attend Middlesex Community Colleges Fine Arts
program, and to transfer to University of Massachusetts Lowell as a Sound
Recording Technology major. I work very hard in my vocational field and I
work on projects outside of school to further my knowledge of the technology
field. I plan to use my knowledge to work as a sound engineer, mainly
working with live sound and entertainment technology. I have found a great
field that I enjoy, and I have also found a field that closely relates to my
interests.
In my life, art is the one thing that will always make me happy. My
character strengths, creativity and appreciation of beauty and excellence,
have a lot to do with this. There is nothing I enjoy more than playing guitar or
painting a new picture. I spend a lot of my time painting, drawing, and
exploring new mediums of art. I am self-taught in many instruments, and I

have taken lessons for some. Activities that revolve around my signature
strengths bring me positive emotions.
I feel most natural when playing music. I have performed many times
before, and that is when I feel most in my element. There is nothing I love
more than singing and playing guitar with my friends in front of a crowd. This
is connected to the positive emotions art brings me, and it is also because of
my signature strengths. I would love to work as a sound engineer, because I
would be surrounded by people who share the same interests as me and get
the same positive emotions I get from music.
In my life, my supportive relationships come mainly from my mother
and my friends. I have a few close friends that support my goals and my
academic decisions. My mother is my best friend and I know that she is
always by my side no matter what I choose to do. She is the one person who
will put up with me complaining and being irate. My close friends are also
very helpful and always there to listen to me. I also have a counselor that is
very supportive of me. My network of supportive relationships is very small
but I am very close with them.
Art brings a sense of purpose to my life, as shown by the previous 10
paragraphs that Ive written about art. I find meaning in hard work and
excellence, whether it be a drawing or a well composed song. I spend a lot of
time appreciating performances and art whenever I can. I think anything that
shows hard work and determination bring a lot of meaning to life. To be able

to portray perfectionism and detail in ones work is a valuable skill that can
bring meaning to even the simplest things. I really enjoy art and the way it
can show how hard somebody has worked to achieve their goal.
One of my achievements in my life is getting into BVT. I worked really
hard in middle school, striving for a place in BVT. Although I didnt get in at
first, I was accepted off of the waiting list. I really wanted to go to BVT and be
in IT, which is where I am now. I did a great job of setting a goal and
achieving it. That was a very big achievement for me.
The group that I share senses of value and identity with is my close
friends. We all listen to similar music and enjoy each others company. We all
really love to play music and that is what brings us together. We are able to
contribute to each others values and interests by sharing new and
interesting things we find or new activities to do together. Again, art is what
has brought me a sense of community. My life revolves around art.
I hope to build a future where I am able to enjoy my work, preferably
as a sound engineer or some job relating closely to my interests. As
Confucius said, Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a
day in your life. I plan to work with music and technology, which are some
of my favorite things. Whether or not I am getting paid well or living lavishly I
dont care, as long as I have a job I am happy at and can live content. I want
to create a life where I do what I love. That would be a life worth living for
me.
