Research Based Learning

Strategies (provide text
chapters/reference)

Syntax surgery is a strategy

for making English syntax
visible to the students
(Herrell & Jordan, 2012, p.
135).

All strategies will be research based and from one of the texts. Please provide reference for each.
Motivation strategy:

Grammar Translation, Audiolingual Method, and Direct Method

(Horwitz, 2013).
(Building Background for ELD Students)

-I would conduct the class in the target language, which is English.

-I would then prepare the lesson material for the class.
-I would then prepare the students for the lesson by talking to them.
-I would begin the lesson by identifying a sentence that difficult for the students to
understand. An example being The truck blue is very fast.
Presentation/ Learning Activities (Strategy Steps)

Grammar Translation, Audiolingual Method,

and Direct Method (Horwitz, 2013).

(includes language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies , interaction, feedback

-I would therefore write the sentence strip and begin the process of rearranging the words.
-I would then rearrange the words. I would have the student cute the words truck and blue
and rearrange them.
-I would show the correct English sequence by having the student place the word truck
where blue was before and where put blue where truck was before. It would then read and
reaffirm the correct English word order and language knowledge.
-It would then read as The blue truck is very fast. This is how it should correct sound since
in Spanish, the word truck and blue would be side to side in the sentence sequence instead
of the opposite way around.
-This would help correct the students knowledge of the word order in English.

Practice and Application

Grammar Translation, Audiolingual Method, and Direct Method

(Horwitz, 2013).

(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)

-I would have the students practice more sentences with the same pattern.
-I would also time the lesson to see how the students respond in a timed setting.
-I would give homework to the students on a similar sentence so that they could practice
more and furthered develop their understanding of the syntax surgery process.
-I would have the students tell how they have understood the lesson so far and also ask
their parents for input on this lesson plan.
Review and Assessment: (What specific assessment tools are being used)

The assessment tools that are being used would be in how the students show progress in
their practice sentences in rearranging the words correctly. Also in how the students did in a
lesson that is timed and their response to doing the lesson in a timed format. I would then
be able to review the progress that the student has shown so far. This would allow me, with
the parents input on their childrens progress, to make more complex and advance lesson
in this same format/lesson type.
Extension:
What are your next steps for future lessons?

To make the sentences more complex and therefore raise the knowledge of the students in
this lesson format. The students would then be able to develop an understanding of the
lesson at a quicker pace and be able to increase their knowledge of syntax surgery.
ReflectionWhat do you anticipate to be a problem for specific students?

ELD Objective-

That the students wouldnt be able to arrange word cards to create

an English sentence correctly. That the students wouldnt be able to add
descriptive to sentences in appropriate place correctly (Herrell & Jordan, 2012).
Content Objective- The students would not be able to understand the concept of
syntax surgery correctly. It would therefore take the student more time and
practice to correctly understand the concept.

What would likely go well? Why?

The process of syntax surgery would become clearly understood to the students in time.
They would then interact more through the exercise lesson in the classroom. They would
be able to proceed into more advance lesson.
What would you like to be more sure about?

That the student could correctly rearrange the sequence of words in a sentence on a
test/exam/quiz. The student would then be able to display their learning and knowledge
in written form. Their educational understanding of the lesson would therefore be shown
and proven. For the students to be able to ask for help when they need it or dont
understand something.
What theory or theorists would most strongly support use of this strategy?

The Grammar Translation, Audiolingual Method, and Direct Method theories all support
this strategy. In the grammar translation, the students do written exercises and written
translations. The audiolingual method uses something almost similar to this. In the direct
method, they reply back to the questions and give feedback on the lesson. This is how
these theories support the current strategy.
