I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
Students will be able to summarize an entire novel by reviewing and simplifying their
chapter summaries.
II. Instructional Materials

ii. Summarizing/predicting sheets (returned from home)

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea)
A. Students should have skills in summarizing.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
i. Ask students to recall where we left off in the story yesterday. What
were some of the most interesting predictions we discussed?
B. Development
i. Read aloud the final chapter.
ii. Ask the class to turn to a partner and share their reaction to the
bittersweet end of the story. After 2 minutes allow some students to
share with the class.

Ask the students to help you make a summary of the whole story
with you by using their summary sheets. Designate a spot for each
chapter on the board and ask the class for key plot points for each.
Once all plot points have been completed ask the class to help you
write a final summary. Ask the students to combine the information
on the board into a few sentences, typed on the smart board as
composed. Make sure the entire class agrees with the summary.

C. Closure
i. Read the final summary aloud.
ii. Ask students to write on the back of their summary packets, the
following as an exit slip: 1. What was something you liked about the
story? 2. What was something you disliked? 3. Would you
recommend it to a friend? Why/why not.

Remind the students to study for their upcoming test Monday!

1. Formative
Students will be assessed on their comprehension and recall by creating a final
summary as well as indicating specific parts they liked/disliked in an exit slip.
2. Summative
A summative test will be given to assess comprehension.
