Grade: 9th Grade

Start: Aug 15th 2013

Quarter 1: Atomic Structure

Subject: Chemistry
Finish: Oct 18th 2013

(UNIT 3 of 3)

Previous Topic:

Acquire Previous Knowledge:

Properties of Matter

Atom subatomic particles

(Physics 8th grade)

STAGE 1 : Desired Results

Established Goals:
Standard 31. Understands Atomic Structure
SC 9.31.1 Recognizes discoveries from Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford and Bohr
and how they lead to modern atomic theory.
SC 9.31.2 Identifies the major components of the nuclear atom and explains how
they interact
Explains how to determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an
atom
Explains how ions and isotopes differ from atoms
SC 9.31.3 Writes electron configurations for the first twenty elements of the
Periodic Table
Enduring Understandings:
Students will understand that:
1) The idea of atoms has evolved
over time
2) The atomic models represent
ideas of atoms, not actual atoms
3) The atomic theory has evolved and
great research has been done dividing
or studying subatomic particles.

Essential Questions:
1) How has the understanding of the Atom
changed our actual world?
2) How does the theory of force of
gravitation help us to understand the
motion of the electrons around the
nucleus?
3) How does the Standard Model relate
with each and every model of the atom
though history?

4) Electrons are detrimental in many

everyday activities that involve energy
transfers and chemical reactions.

4) How have Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms

become essential to our life on Earth?

Students will know:

Students will be able to:

Models of the atom

Write electron configurations for the first

20 elements of the periodic table

Structure of the nuclear atoms

Build 3D atomic models
Traits of subatomic Particles
How subatomic particles interact

STAGE 2 : ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE

Performance Tasks (Activities):
+ Know Mr. Atom: Students will
research about the developing of the
Atom knowledge (perspective). Then
they will write and build a 3D book
showing the most important facts of
Atom history and will share it with a
4th grade student who will keep the
book.

Other Evidence:
-

Quizzes (1 Quizlet, 1 Schoology)

On-going Assessment (1 CSI, 1
IU2T)
Classroom exercises (1 Online
Game)
Socratic Seminar Class (1 Flipped
VC)
Laboratory Practice (1 Flame Test)
Exam (Chemistry Basics & Atom
Theories)

STAGE 3 : LEARNING PLAN

ACQUIRE: Through presentations and worksheets the students will acquire

knowledge and will learn to apply the basic concepts of Chemistry in their daily life.
MAKE MEANING: The connection to the real world will be made by solving
contemporary problems using the scientific method and through video research,
online quizzes, and teacher live demos.
TRANSFER: Students will be able to apply and transfer their knowledge to
different contexts through laboratory practices and performance tasks
HABITS OF MIND: Students will be able to apply different HOM strategies through
Laboratory practices, Kineto and HOT Quizzes and Performance tasks as follows:

GAME BASED LEARNING: Students will have access to different games that will
help them connect their learning targets in a fun and relaxed way.

Classroom grouping:
Pair working as a normal way of working in class
Group working (3-4) when doing an individual research and integrating afterwards in
class
Group working (2-4) in Lab Practices
Group working (11/11) on Contests
Group working (2-4) on Project Presentations

Resources:

Reflections:

Chemistry Book
Web research
Subject Movies
Library books
Lab Practices
Classroom games (Contests,
Representations)

Not every resource in used on everyday

work but a good mix of these will ensure a
fun and successful learning

Differentiation in Performance
Tasks:

Differentiation in
Classwork/Quiz/HMK:

Know Mr. Atom.Scaffolding.+ A backpack with links of different

websites and a planner will be given
for students to help them get

Scaffolding.+ Use of Text Book and Notes is allowed,

unless its a Concept Quiz or a PartialQuarterly Exam
Compacting.-

organized.
Entry points.+ Use of classroom role play will be
used to engage students with atoms
elements
Tiered Activities.+ GRASPS allow students to choose
from 3 levels of difficulty.
Anchoring Activities.+ Project will be launched at the
beginning of the quarter after watching
a video and solving a Visual Thinking
activity.

+ A Diagnostic Exam will be submitted at

the beginning of Chemistry in daily life
topic, to allow Gifted-Talented students to
the Periodic Table.
Tiered Activities.+ Partial and Quarterly Exams will exhibit
at least two levels of difficulty in sections.
Anchoring Activities.+ An online game will be used to increase
interest of the students in the topic in turn.

Follow up: This Unit is building base ground knowledge for the next Term
(The Periodic Table)
