Envision going to a school that has a reputation of a
top-notch sports program, but has just released that they
have cheating for over twenty years. Their athletes have
been failing college and have been taking fake classes
that they dont have to do work for. The University of
North Carolina was not following the rules while the other
school their schools they were playing were following the
rules. Also, the university knew they had implemented a
paper class system. According to the Chicago Tribune and
Mary Willingham, the University of North Carolina (UNC)
has to be punished because what they did was against the
rules.
To inaugurate, the University of North Carolina is
responsible for having a paper class system that their
students were taking so they didnt have to go to that
class, which showed that the students had penurious
writing levels according to Mary Willingham. The video
show that the students didnt have to go to class. The
UNC whistleblower mentioned a paper class system that
explains what the University of North Carolina was doing.
Mary Willingham who works in the sports department at
UNC said We had a paper class system where athletes

wouldnt have to go to class they were just given a

prompt

to

write

paper.

This

shows

that

UNC

bamboozled because their students didnt have to go to

class. Additionally, that the people didnt do one paper;
while other schools have athletes are going to classes
with many graded assignments every day. The video then
talked about how the students did on this paper they had
to turn in for a grade. Mary Willingham also admitted 9
times out of 10 they didnt really write the paper. It was
just a recycled paper and they were almost always graded
as A or B. This shows that the athletes were taking these
classes just to boost their GPAs, especially if a recycled
paper was used to get an A. The A will boost the GPA and
allow them to play on the sports team. The video then
talked about the students writing abilities. Thirdly, Mary
Willingham stated that The athlete's level were so low
and I am talking second or third grade maybe. This
shows the students are so bad in school that they
shouldnt be on the team if even in the school. The
students were so uneducated it was like they were a tree.
Even Mary Willingham, who works in the athletic
department at UNC thought it wasnt fair that UNC has
been executing this for two decades and she didnt even
go to the games anymore. Especially, after UNC recorded
eighty two million four hundred thousand dollars in sports

revenue. Overall, Mary Willingham believed that UNC

should be punished for their actions because of their
paper class system and failing students.
Secondly, the University of North Carolina was not
following the rules while the other schools were. The
Chicago Tribune article talked about the purpose of this
class being created. The article claims thats students
didnt do any work and just took classes to boost their
GPA. According to the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), a student with a poor grade, usually
lower than a C or D, will not be permitted to frolic sports.
This shows that UNC cheated because they did no work
and the school gets to use athletes that shouldnt be
playing. The Chicago Tribune article talked about what
happened after Crowder retired. It stated that Crowder
retired in 2009 and football players GPAs started
dropping. This shows since this person had the paper
class system. Thats because since the people stopped
taking the paper class system, they didnt have any boost
for their GPA. Thats not good because more than three
thousand students didnt follow the rules. That is why The
Chicago Tribune inclines that UNC should be punished.
All in all, Mary Willingham and the Chicago Tribune
have to be punished for their actions because they didnt
follow the rules. This was apparent immensely because

they created a paper class system that boost students

GPA, where the students didnt have to go to class and
just had to do an assignment that most people didnt do.
Also, the students had a low writing level and were not
aloud to be on a sports team with that amount of writing
ability and grade average. And they did while the other
schools followed all the rules. Will NCAA charge UNC
with a fee?
