Construction paper
Toilet paper rolls, bubble wrap, rubber bands (for making grass)
Different shapes and sizes of recycled bottles
Paint
Smocks
6. Optimal Students/Seating Arrangement for the Lesson
This activity will take place during learning centers. The students will be in groups of four and
together they will rotate between four centers. They will have approximately 15 minutes at each
center. The students will be seated around the small group table in the back of the classroom.
All of the materials will be on the middle of the table.
7. Lesson Sequence

Introduction: I will show the students all of the different types and shapes of recycled
bottles and then explain that if you use the bottom of them they look like flowers. I will
also explain that they can make their own grass stamp but putting bubble wrap over
the top of an empty toilet paper roll, and securing it with a rubber band. I will show the
students an example of how to correctly use the materials. (3 minutes)

What will you do/say

I will introduce the different types of bottles
and show the bottoms of each one. We are
going to use these bottles as stamps and dip
them in paint and then they will look like
flowers on the paper! If you want to make
grass, you can also use this toilet paper as a
stamp. Before we begin, everyone needs to

What the student(s) do/say

Hopefully the students will be excited to work
with paint. They will get a smock and get
ready to begin.

Casey Roche
get a smock on and roll up your sleeves. (3
minutes)

Procedures: Students will use a variety of recycled materials to create a work of art on
the paper. (10 minutes)

What will you do/say

You may begin creating your piece of art!
Remember, dont use too much paint or it
wont dry very fast. Once you use a material,
place it back in the box on the middle of the
table for someone else to use. Make sure
the pain stays on your paper and not on the
table. (10 minutes)

What the student(s) do/say

Students will complete the activity. During
this time, they may ask for assistance on
manipulating the materials. They also may
ask why all of the pictures look so different.

Closure: To end the lesson, I will ask students to carry their paper over to the drying
rack, take off their smock, and wash their hands. (2 minutes)

What will you do/say

You need to put the finishing touches on
your paper. Make sure your name is
somewhere I can see. Carefully carry your
paper over and put it on the drying rack.
Then, take your smock off and wash your
hands. (2 minutes)

What the student(s) do/say

The students will clean up and prepare to
move to the next center.

8. Modifications for children at different learning levels

This lesson is designed for the inclusion of all students. All of the materials are large enough to
have a wide grip so I do not feel this should be an issue for any student.
9. Reflections
My class absolutely loved this activity! They seemed excited that they could use everyday items
to make works of art. Each picture turned out unique and the students were able to freely
express themselves. The students made a mess with the paint, but seemed to understand that
they were responsible for cleaning up after themselves.
