Objectives: To review and check understanding of rhythms and rests (quarter, half, dotted half,
whole) and time signatures.
Materials Used:
Dry Erase Board
Rhythm flash cards
Rhythm basket ball
Floor staff (tape)
Procedure:
Clap rhythms and have them clap it back from flashcards
o Use a couple different flash cards
Rhythm flash cards

o Students will clap and speak the rhythms included on each card using Kodaly
system to check for understanding
We will make human rhythms
o I will demonstrate how to make quarter notes (standing straight with arms at
sides), rests (arms bent up at sides), and eighth notes (2 students with one arm out
to connect to other students arm)
o I will draw the time signature on the board
o I will call on patient students who quietly raise their hand and come down to the
front of the classroom
o I will ask them what rhythm they would like to be and help them stand to look
like their rhythm
o I will have the class speak and clap the rhythm
o If needed, I can write the rhythm on the board if it becomes too confusing
To review notes, go over how to remember lines and spaces
o Use white board to write the notes on lines and spaces and ask students to give me
the sayings they use to remember each
o Have students come up to the staff on the floor to show where each note is
Use rhythm/notes basketball to review rhythms and notes
o Split class into 2 teams
o Have students come up one at a time to clap a rhythm flash card and shoot to try
to make a basket
o If student claps rhythm correctly, team gets a point, baskets will count for extra
points
o For notes, ask student to come stand on the staff on the designated note that I will
give
o If the note is correct, the team gets a point and baskets will count as extra points
Review a couple rhythms before they leave as a whole class
