Juan, a 5th grader from Costa Rica, is in your English Language Arts class. His language
acquisition level is Stage 3; his parents have been non-supportive of his English speaking at
home, yet, they want desperately for him to perform well in school. This week's standard for 5th
grade ELA is: E05.B-K.1.1.2: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they
are supported by key details; summarize the text.
Using what you learned in this chapter about the six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, the five stages
of language acquisition, and the four learning styles and suggested teaching strategies, respond to
the following in paragraph format:
What issues might you encounter in teaching this lesson to Juan at his level of language
acquisition?
List three different novels, non-fiction books, or short readings that you might use with Juan that
would meet his learning needs
Using those same texts you chose in #2, make a list of each of the four learning styles and
provide an example of the instructional strategies you would use to address each of the four
learning styles (refer to the video and Chapter 3 for rich examples!).
Then, create an activity that would include at least two of Bloom's Levels of Taxonomy. Make
sure to identify them and describe how these are being met through this activity.
First, Juan is Stage 3 of language acquisition. This means that he is still developing and
having speech emergence. He can make simple sentences, sound out stories phonetically, learn
key vocabulary and concepts, understand condensed or simplified content materials, and
understand teacher explanations. This task might be harder for him because it is not until Stage 4:
Intermediate Fluency that the student has the ability to highlight important information in a text.
This would make it very difficult for him to figure out what the main ideas of the text are, let
alone explain how they are supported by details in the text.
Juan would need short stories that are filled with key vocabulary. He would also need
books that have a clear concept if I were to be working on him determining the main idea of the
text. Green Eggs and Ham would be an excellent book. It has rhyming and simple words. It also
has a main idea, which is to try new things and to not judge a book by its cover.
Where the Wild Things Are is a great book that discusses punishments and dreams. It is
also on a 1st grade reading level so it would have simple sentences for the ELL to read.
Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type is another fun book. Students enjoy reading because
they find the story funny. The main idea is that words have meaning. It is at a 2nd grade reading
level so the ELL will be able to read.

The activity that I would do is changing the outcome of the story. I would have the
students analyze that happened in the story, which is level 4, then I would have them synthesize a
new plan or outcome of the story, which is level 5.
