SCREENCASTING PROJECT:
CRITERION B. DEVELOPING IDEAS
DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION: 28th AUGUST, 2014 12 midnight
Topic of your project: How to use weebly.
1. Design Specification:
(Visit this link to study examples of good and bad design specification: http://goo.gl/kzyPfM )
Based on your analysis of your previous research, list the design specification requirements for your proposed
product.
Design Specification

A.

Essential characteristics:

Explain why this characteristic is important to include based

on your previous research.

1.

My weebly tutorial should contain different section slides to

benefit users.

By separating into different weebly parts, my tutorial will be

more effective and easier to view.

2.

My tutorial should contain upbeat music in the background but in

a low volume.

Having music will make the tutorial interesting and with the low
volume my voice will be heard clearly.

3.

My tutorial should not be shorter than 2 minutes and should not

be longer than 12 minutes.

I feel that too short tutorials won't make much sense and since
my tutorial is to cover everything in weebly with sections, the end
result will be long.

4.

My tutorial should include subtitles so unclear voice or

pronunciation will be cleared.

My accent might not be understandable to others to prevent this,

the subtitles will help understand the instruction clearer.

5.

My tutorial should not include bright colours, such as yellow

bright pink and orange.

Bright colours can be very distracting and using dull colours

gives a more focused screen.

6.

My tutorial should include a visible pointer and visible text.

Having a visible pointer to indicate the area to click and clear text
to understand.

7.

My narrations should be clear and detailed.

My narration should describe what I am doing, for example: Now

go and click the tool which has a little star on the top right
corner...

8.

While opening the weebly site I use google chrome instead of

internet explorer.

I would want open weebly on Google chrome because Google

chrome is faster than internet explorer and while the tutorial is
recording I don't want any delays.

B.

Desirable characteristics:

---

1.

The desktop background should be the colour of Purple

Purple is my desired colour I would like to have it as my

background when screencasting

2.

The pointer should be magnified

I when watching a tutorial cant see the pointer sometimes

because of the white areas so we should magnify it.

2. Design Ideas for the Product:

Describe how you can apply the different 8 ideas to your own project from the video clips that you have watched
in class.
Screencast Style,
Ideas or Effects

a. Plain voice narration

How useful is the idea?

0 Not useful at all
1 Little application
2 - Has some application
3 Should definitely be
included

Possible Applications of
This Idea or Style
for Your Product

1
For a small tutorial this could be useful
as you just need the information.

Limitations or Disadvantages
of UsingThis Idea or Style
for Your Product

A plain voice narration will get the

viewers bored and will not be
interested at what they are saying.

b. Voice + camera

More interesting to watch the person

narrate than to listen to a voice.

Theres no point in having a video

plus camera because the camera in
no way helps the viewers.

c. Typing instructions
instead of talking

Some might find it fun to read the

instructions instead of hearing a voice
which might not be understandable or
muffled.

Some might find it irritating to read

every instruction, and find it easier to
listen to a voice instead. It could just
be a written as set of instructions with
pictures.

d. Use of background
music

Background music will often make

people more focused on what they are
doing.

Sometimes the background music has

a high volume, that you cant even
hear the narration.

e. Using titles to divide

into different
sections

Using titles could benefit so that the

viewer understand the next step or next
action being shown in the tutorial.

It might be distracting to when

watching the tutorial as after each step
there is a change in picture having
titles of the next instruction, this could
cause confusion.

f. Zooming +
annotating

This style could really make the tutorial

more specific and understandable,
when zoomed in and annotated the
instructions are clear.

This style could cause people to get

lost and not find where the zoomed
area is, when it is not zoomed people
can easily see where it is supposed to
be on the screen.

g. Double screen

This wont be useful because in my

tutorial, I wont be using or needing
another window open.

N/A

h. Using green screen

technique

Viewers will be interested and intrigued

to watch the tutorial.

Viewers will get distracted by the

person and not have total focus on the
steps/instructions.

3. Final Design Idea: (Storyboard)

Create a summarized storyboard to show the style/design of your screencasting project.

Include annotations to describe resources that you will use.

Scene 1:

Narration:
This will be my opening section, I will start
with this introduction slide.

(Place a screenshot)
Scene 2:

Narration:
I will be having this slide to show the different
chapters I will be having in this video tutorial
and also include the time of the video it starts
so that people can skip to the part they want
to focus on.

Scene 3:

Narration:
After finishing every chapter a slide of the
next chapter will show. While people are
skipping through the video to the given time,
to prevent missing anything, they can see
where I have had this slide and play it from
then.

Scene 4:

Narration:
I will then show them how to sign up on
weebly and also show them where the login
is.

Scene 5:

Narration:
I will then show how to add a site and what
the other buttons mean such as the Stats
and what options you have with More.

Scene 6:

Narration:
I will tell them the choices and that I will be
focusing on how to use the site and briefly
show them how a blog and store looks like.

Scene 7:

Narration:
I will show how to choose the theme and see
the theme in different colours.

Scene 8:

Narration:

I will show how to create a Domain and

which one to choose.

Scene 9:

Narration:
I will then show them how to edit their site,
with the Building, Designing, Pages and go
through the settings and describe and show
the use of the tools.

4. Evaluating your final design: storyboard

Evaluate your storyboard using your design specification.
Scoring guide:
0: No work done

5-6: Mostly met

1-2: Minimally met

7-8: Highly/Fully met

3-4: Moderately met

B. Based on your design specification, discuss the strong and weak points of your final design idea
(storyboard):
Explain
Strong
Points

Weak
Points:

My tutorial will be detailed in every little thing and will be explaining everything on weebly I know. It will be beneficial to viewers
so they can skip to the part where they want to know by looking at the table of Content.

To some having to hear every detail might be a waste of time, my video tutorial might be too long to those who already know
bits of weebly.

5. Requirements for the final design:
