D: Reflecting on the Impacts of Science Ecology Plot

GRASP-

Human patterns may affect the environment in a system.

You are a city planner decided what to do with an open lot in your neighborhood.
You must design a space and relay the information back to the public through a
pamphlet.
Your audience is the public. You are trying to convince others that your idea for
the open lot is the best. You want to make us give you our money.
The situation is you are competing with fellow designers on building your idea in
this lot. You must be knowledgeable about the ecological principles happening in
this space.
The product is going to a brochure containing six things: a blue print of your
design, economic benefits, social benefits, a food web, going green, and carbon
emissions from your design.

Students will create a brochure on the ideas for an open plot of land. The goal is to get me to give
them money to build their ideas. They must accurately describe the food web, containing 11 animals,
that currently lives in the open plot of land. Four examples of carbon emissions must be given of the
type of building produces. There must be social and economic benefits, 1 negative and 3 positive, of
the building type. You want to lower your carbon emissions by being green with 3 examples.
The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors below
i. outline the ways in which science is used to address a specific problem or issue
ii. outline the implications using science to solve a specific problem or issue, interacting with a
factor
iii. apply scientific language to communicate understanding but does so with lim ited success
iv. document sources with limited success
i. sum m arize the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue
ii. describe the implications of using science and its application to solve a specific problem or issue,
interacting with a factor

Stage 1: Picking your idea

In this stage you are going to pick what type of structure that you would like to build
on the empty plot of land. Choose something that you would actually want in your
neighborhood. This makes the project easier to complete if you like what you are
researching. Mark an X in the box when you decide what you are choosing.
Power Plant a power plant large enough to provide 50% of the electricity for your
neighborhood

Part 2: Researching your idea

1.

2.

Draw a food web that is currently in the open lot. (One useful website to research
common Illinois animals: http://animals.pawnation.com/common-wild-animal-found-illinois11561.html)
Must include:
o 11 animals (one being humans). Have a variety of:
"
Primary producerse
"
Primary consumers
"
Secondary consumers

How does your structure give off carbon emissions? Does your structure take in
carbon emissions? (ex: your structure uses fossil fuels to power its electricity)
a.

3.

If you use vocab words, provide a definition in your brochure

W hat are the economic benefits to the structure you are building? ( ex: how much
income a year does your structure bring in)
a. Must include 3 positive benefits and 1 negative benefit (4 total)

4.

W hat are the social benefits to the structure you are building? (Why is it fun?)
a. Must include four reasons why it is fun
