ELACC1W8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or
gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
OVERVIEW:
The First Grade students in Mrs. Youmans class are using their research skills to complete a
unit on persuasive writing. The students will watch a video Two of a Kind: Hey, Little Ant
and research about ants in small groups using books (print) and websites (non-print). Using a tchart titled Ants: Pros / Cons the SLMS will explain that pros are positive things about ants
(SAVE!) and cons will be negative things about ants (SQUISH!). After group discussions, the
students will make a list of their findings.
FINAL PRODUCT:
The students will use printed resources (books) and electronic resources (online searches and
SLMS created pathfinder) to retrieve information. Using this information, the students will
create a persuasive poster to Save the Ant or Squish the Ant. Their poster should present
their opinion and at least 3 sentences that support their opinion. They will also complete a KWL
chart illustrating their knowledge of ants.
LIBRARY LESSON(S):
Under the instruction of the SLMS, students will learn how to find information
(online, print, and electronic resources) for library research related to the content
topic. The SLMS will introduce and pass out the KWL chart handouts regarding ants to be
completed by students.
ASSESSMENT
Product
The SLMS and teacher will use a teacher related rubric to evaluate the poster to make
sure students understand the lesson and followed instructions correctly.
Process
The SLMS and teacher will observe students as they use library resources, collaborate
with peers, display writing/creative skills and answer their questions as needed.
Student self-questioning
Did I understand my task?
Did I listen and follow directions?
Did I work well with others?
Did I ask for help when I needed it?
Did I use at least one research resource (book, online website)?
Did I check over my work?

Instruction/activities
Direct instruction:
The SLMS will introduce the lesson and with the assistance of the Teacher give a review
of what the students have learned about persuasive writing. Next, the SLMS will
introduce the book, Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Using a projector,
screen, and laptop, the students will watch a video entitled: Two of a kind: Hey Little
Ant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj6Xuyr7DDQ on which the book is based. The
students will complete the first two columns of the KWL chart. They will write what
they Know about ants and what they Want to know about ants.
Modeling and guided practice:
Upon completion of the video and the KWL chart, the students will explore articles
(online websites) and books (guided reading groups). After researching about ants, the
students will record positive and negative things learned about ants, and come together
to report and record what is learned on the class Pros/Cons T-chart. The students will use
the Teacher Model T-charts to share expectations and open discussion. The SLMS
posted two Model T-charts entitled Save the Ant and Squish the Ant. The students
were able to use this model as an example of what components their posters were to
include. The SLMS and the Teacher lead a discussion of reasons why the ant should be
saved or squished. The students took this opportunity to collaborate with others and
think about the information presented.
Independent practice:
The SLMS and the Teacher will provide one-on-one assistance as they walk around and
observe students working in small groups. Using the information they learned through
their research findings, the students will create a persuasive poster to Save the Ant or
Squish the Ant. Their poster should present their opinion, include a creative
illustration, and include at least 3 reasons that support their opinion. They should use the
information they have collected as a class to support their opinion. The SLMS and the
Teacher will check for complete sentences and the students best capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling The SLMS and Teacher will assist students who have
questions or needs direction in their task.

Sharing and reflecting:

The students completed the last column of their KWL chart and shared what they
learned about the ants. The students presented their persuasive poster at the end of the
session. They told their opinion and read their supporting sentences from the Authors
chair in the media center, while their classmates listened. The posters were displayed in
the hallway for other students and staff to view.
Reflections
As I reflect on this lesson, I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Mrs. Youmans in completing
this unit with her students. As a media clerk, one perk to this assignment is that I had access to
the various features and resources in the media center. I was able to pull books for the lesson
and set up the projector and video presentation for the students in advance. This allowed us to
go straight into the lesson. I also had access to the schedule. I met with Mrs. Youmans and we
looked over the schedule to see which time would be best for her, since the students have a daily
schedule with specials, etc. Once we established a library time, the students were able to come
in the library and complete this lesson without interruptions. It took a total of 2 library visits to
complete this lesson. In the first visit the students were able to view the video and begin the
research with the t-chart. In the next visit, the students were able to complete the research and
posters. There are a total of ten workstations so we were able to break the whole group into
smaller groups. Some completed their research using the books, while others used the
computers to research online websites. Overall, the lesson was a great success. The students
were very excited about the lesson and creating their posters. Mrs. Youmans was a pleasure and
joy to collaborate with teaching this lesson. What I liked most about us working together is that
she allowed me to be the teacher. She took the role of the assistant and helped me work with the
students. The only set-back that we experienced in this lesson is that we had a few technical
difficulties with the website searches. Some computers were slower than others in retrieving
information which resulted in lost time. The persuasive poster rubric and the KWL chart were
good assessment tools that we used to make sure that the lesson was successful. The students
were able to assess their performance using the rubric.
