Life and Work of the Church
Lighting the Christ Candle
*Sung Introit: Let There Be Light verse 1

VU 679

Let there be light, let there be understanding,

Let all the nations gather, let them be face to face.
*Passing of the Peace
*The Call to Worship:
Go up to a high mountain, to the thin place where you can
meet God. May we open our senses to discover God is
near.
Look over the landscape; look with discerning eyes. We see
the world struggling, and hear its despair.
Listen for the Word -- present and pressing, challenging
injustice, urging compassion, calling for peace.
Find your place with saints and prophets and Jesus himself,
whose lives give inspiration, whose words encourage
and guide.
Move through this time of worship -- meeting, looking,
listening, preparing. God, send your Spirit to be with us
and show us how to live.
2

*The Opening Prayer:

God of light and glory, may we recognize your glory around
us --- a sense of the sacred found in the everyday: in the
stories of faith we tell, in the lives of the people we meet,
in the words we use to speak.
May your majesty and mystery always be within our seeing,
close enough for our hearing, and present in our living,
praying these words of our Lord,
Our Father, who art in heaven...

How Good, Lord, to Be Here

We Respond to Gods Word

Offering Invitation
*Response: Your Work O God Needs Many Hands VU537
Your work, O God, needs many hands to help you
everywhere, and some there are who cannot serve unless our
gifts we share.
Because we love you and your work, our offering now we
make; be pleased to use it as your own, we ask for Jesus
sake.

*The Prayer of Dedication:

Responding to your blessing on us, O God, and our love for
you, we bring these offerings to our resources, our best
efforts, and ourselves. May we prove faithful to you and to
those faithful ones who have come before us. May our lives
also shine brightly in the world as evidence of our hope.
AMEN!

Go Now in Peace

Go now in peace, never be afraid,

God will go with you each hour of everyday.
Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true.
Know he will guide you in all you do.
Go now in love and show you believe,
Reach out to others so all the world can see.
God will be there watching from above,
Go now in peace, in faith and in love.

Community and Justice Work

A Place of Our Own

The United Church has been supporting ministry of the Deaf in
Newfoundland since 1987. We began by having volunteers teach
Bible stories to the younger children at the Newfoundland School
for the Deaf in St. Johns. When it became clear that a paid staff
person was needed, Beverley Ares was hired as the Coordinator
of Deaf Ministry and remained at the school for over 20 years. The
ministry was expanded to include all age groups, youth groups,
church services, and a Bible study program for Deaf adults. Much
of this ministry was done ecumenically.
When the Newfoundland School for the Deaf closed in August
2010, we were faced with the challenge of how to reach the Deaf
community without a home base. Ministry of the Deaf
Newfoundland and Labrador, an ecumenical organization that
includes The United Church of Canada, hired a young Deaf
woman, Nancy Andrews-Emberley, who was once a student at the
school. As Deaf Coordinator, Nancy keeps in contact with the
Deaf community through newsletters and the Internet. We gather
for church services, Bible study, barbecues, Christmas, and
potlucks. It is a joy to see young adults bring their children and
grandparents bring their grandchildren to church services and
events held at various churches. Ministry of the Deaf also provides
interpreters for occasions such as funerals, baptisms, and
weddings.
Where once Deaf people felt like outsiders at a hearing service or
gathering, they now worship, learn, and celebrate community
together at various churches where communication is in American
Sign Language. Thanks be to God.
Thanks to our gifts for Mission and Service, the love of Jesus is
extended to the Deaf community of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Please give generously.
Mighty and tender God, our gifts to M&S help your church to
do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.
