English I Syllabus

Ms. Cresta Strickland

Spring 2015
Welcome to English I. This course is designed to ensure that you are familiar with
English terminology, general study skills, vocabulary that is expected to be learned and
USED in my class and writing, the ability to analyze, interpret, and express opinions of
both informational and fictional texts in a professional manner, and adequately use the
conventions of English: mechanics, grammar, and spelling. You will have a State
cumulative exam for English I. This is a state and county decision, not a school one. We
will work diligently during the semester to make sure you do well on this test and are
successful in the course.
In addition, the curriculum will incorporate 21st Century Learning Skills: communication
skills, technology skills, citizenship, work efficacy, collaboration, English I
content, and problem solving.
Projects for this class will focus literary elements, authors methods, interpretation,
explanation, and analysis of several works of informational and fictional writing across
genres of literature. Expectations for the course include: the use and maintenance
of a binder, pre-planning for projects, pre-writing, peer editing, and final drafts
of writing, and evidence of growth in speaking and literacy during the
semester.
You will need the following materials:
(1)A three-ring binder and dividers for notebook. (Please no five subject notebooks)
(2)A min. of a $5 gift card from Wal-mart. This is to purchase any supplies needed
during the semester, such as: coloring pencils, post-its, poster boards, markers,
etc.
(3)Pencils(absolutely no colorful pens)
Grades as outlined in the student handbook apply to this class along with the learning
outcomes listed above.
The classroom rules are as follows: being respectful to adults and peers, no
food, gum, candy, or drinks in the classroom, be prepared for class. Also,
personal items like cosmetics, iPods, cell phones, etc. are not permitted to use and
should be kept out of site.
Due dates are non-negotiable and should not be missed unless it is absolutely beyond
your control. Points will be deducted for any late assignments.
Presentations cannot be late and cannot be made up. A conference with both the
parent and student may be held if excessive due dates are missed.
Time on task is very important in this program. Excellence is what we all strive for in
and outside of this classroom. Live up to the expectations that we have for you and that
you have for yourself.
Absences are sometimes inevitable. However, when you are absent, it is YOUR
responsibility to collect any missing classroom notes, assignments, etc. upon your return.

Retest Opportunities: Students who make anything below a C on a test will have
one opportunity to retake that test. That opportunity will last only 10 school days
following the original date of the exam.
Restroom Passes: Students are expected to visit the restroom between classes, unless
they have a submitted note from a doctor permitting them to be excused from class to
use the restroom due to a medical condition. I will permit only one restroom break for all
other students during the course of the semester.
Take a deep breath. Everything will be just fine! I am the key to success in English I
and I will give you the tools you need to succeed. If you have any questions or you need
any additional help, all that you need to do is ask.
