What Must be Learned

How to use digital cameras
and download pictures; Online
resources for multi-cultural
project; Students need to learn
how to use e-mail; Students
need to learn how to develop
travel brochures/booklets that
can be e-mailed to partners in
other country. Students will
need to learn internet research
skills if needed.
A more in-depth approach to
learn about other cultures- a
hands-on research based
project. Students will need to
partner with students in
another country and exchange
information in order to
research backgrounds and
locales. Teacher will need to
act as a facilitator as students
work in groups to build travel
brochures/booklets about their
country to e-mail to their
partners in the other country.
Teacher will also need to work
with groups to ensure what
information is being shared
with the other country.
Students need to learn about
the richness of other cultures

foods from other cultures.

This is not enough
information in regards to other
countries and/or cultures.

as well as learn to respect and

appreciate other cultures that
are different from their own.
Students need to realize the
similarities they share with
other cultures but at the same
time respect each others
differences. Students will also
learn about the geography and
government of the other
country that they will be
studying. Students will also
be learning more about their
own country and government
as they prepare travel
brochures/booklets to share
with their student partners in
the other country.

B.
There are several context and logistical issues in this situation that Mia must address in
order to implement this new strategy effectively in her classroom. The first task Mia must
accomplish is to seek permission from her principal to allow this project. Once she has
permission for the project, she will need to seek permission from her students parents to allow
them to participate in the project. Most projects do not need parental permission. However, this
project entails communicating over the internet with students from a foreign country. Mia will
also need an Acceptable Use Policy signed by each student before embarking upon this project.
This could take a few days. In the meantime, Mia will need to learn the process of linking up
with the other teachers in the other countries in order for the project to be successful. She will
need to meet with the technology director at her school to ensure that the computers she will be
using will be able to access the websites necessary for the project. In other words, she will need
to make sure that the schools firewall will not block access to the foreign country. She will need
to make sure that the students are allowed e-mail capabilities at the school. She will need to
make sure the computers are linked to printers and she will need to make sure she has access to
enough computers for her class. If necessary, she will need to schedule a time that she can take
her class to the computer lab.
Mia, as well as her students, will need to learn how to use the digital camera and upload
pictures. She will need to ensure that her students are familiar with e-mail and internet research
skills. They will also need to know how to use the software that allows them to make the travel
brochures and/or booklets.

Mia will need to form cooperative groups for the project. She will need to decide what
information she wants the students to gather in regards to the other country and culture as well as
how much information to allow her students to share with their partners in the other country. She
will need to produce a list of instructions and a rubric for the project to hand out to her students
prior to beginning the project.
Finally, Mia will need to be prepared with a backup plan on days when the technology
might not be working. The backup plan will need to keep the students engaged and focused on
their project.
