2nd Grade

INQUIRY IN ACTION
In second grade this month we have
been working on many interesting
topics. I have outlined the highlights
for you below.

Whats new this month?


We are studying the parts of speech in
Language Arts. We continue in using
our Language Central books and are
studying how we can work together to
change history. Some other areas of
focus are plural nouns, singular nouns,
Authors purpose, and asking
questions!

RAZ Kids online everyday. They should
read each book a total of 3 times
before taking a test.

Math and Science

school. In Science, we wil begin a new


unit on pebbles and stones. The
children will explore with various
pebbles and stones. We will work on
organization and categorizing with
shapes, colors, and texture.

Special Projects
We are completing our inquiry project.
Parents will be able to see the
completed project during parent
conferences. The project is focused on
social studies. The children are
creating a time line of their life and
the project is extended for children to
plan their future. How has life
changed since they were born. Where
they see themselves in 20 years.

Literacy
In literacy we have been working on
phonics work around long vowel
sounds and the blended vowels that
make them. This is helping both
reading and writing for students.
Students work in centers in order to
get more small-group time with the
teacher. This has allowed us to better
meet the needs of our diverse group
of learners whose English levels are

Community
In math class we continue studying
patterns, counting with a calculator,
temperatures, and base-10 Structures.
Please have your child study math
facts at home. There is an oral test
every Friday. We continue to use
Rocket Math for addition and will soon
move on to subtraction. The concepts
and the vocabulary used are essential
for students as they move up to the
higher grades in an English-only

In the new year we continue to focus


on our Anti-Bullying initiative. The
2nd grade will be performing an antibulling song on Friday the 30th
during our morning assembly. They
will be great performers! We have a
zero tolerance at BCIS for Bullying!
We have also continued working on
following directions and listening this
month. We have also continue
working on taking responsibility.

As students enter 2nd grade it is very
important that they start to be
accountable for their actions and
their impact on the classroom and
school community. We have had

many discussions, lessons and
activities to further define our
community.
