Abstract. The AIN fauticles reinforced composite was fabricated on the surface off aksminum
6061-T6 alloy rolled plate by five passes friction str processing (FSP). Microstructure of FSPed
sample was eharsetenzed hy optical microscope and sesnring electron microscope. AIN particles i
composite were verified by EDS and XRD. Microhardness and resistance to wear were also
invesignted. Resilts show that grains in composite were refined by dynamic roerystalization and
uniformly dispersed AIN particles. Composite region bonded with the AL substrate well. No reaction
toccuired at the interface between AIN and AL matrix. By comparison with base metal, the
ESP.prodiced composite exbibited improved microhardness and substantial wear weight loss
reduction,
Introduction
Aluminum and is alloy are used mastly in fabrication of aeroepce an transportstien machine due
to their noble properties such as high strength to weight ratio and low density. However, their
Luibotogical applicaions have been limited by their relatively poor Wear resistance [1] It is widely
identified that the mechanical properties of aluminum ard its alloys, eg. strength, clastic modulus,
hardness, and resistance to wear, ean be improved by incorporating ceramic into alurninum raatix
to form composite [2]. There are several methods to fabricate partcutate reinforced akiminam
based composites, including stir casting, squesze casting, molten metal infiltration, and powder
‘metallurgy. Tt should be pointed ow that these Processing techniques for forming composite are
based on liquid phase processing at high temperature, It is hard to avoid porosity and undesimble
solidified microstructure in composite (3)
Enictin stir processing (FSP), @ solid-cate surface modification technique, has been recently
noticed for making aluminum and magnesium matrix surface composites with excellent mechanic
properties, FSP induces intense plastic deformation and high temperature in the processed zone
through high speed sti of FSP tool to mstedials end fiction at contact surfaces between ESP tool
and processed material. In this way, it is possible to incorporaie the ceramic particles into the
‘metalic substrate plate, to farm the surface composite with fine grains and uniformly dispersed
reinforcement particles. Some researchers have reported the fabrication of surface composite such
as AUSENs [2], AVALOs [3,5], AUSIC[4,8], AUCNT[6], AZ31/Si02 [7] by this pmeess. Akiminum
nitride (AIN) has atracted much attention as a promising reinforeement for aluminum rnatrix
composite (AMC), since it possesses & series of excellent propetties such 2s high thennal
conductivity, high hardhess, low thermal expansivity, no eeeetion with aluminum and especially
