FIRE PROTECTION
There are three (2) strategies for protecting against and dealing with fire :

2.

(a)

Structural and Design Precaution

Providing protection through insulation, integrity and stability permitting
people to escape, for example compartmentalization, smoke control,
unobstructed means of escape.

(b)

Fire Detectors and Alarm

Activated by sensing heat, flame, smoke or flammable gas for example heat
detectors, radiation detectors and smoke detectors.

FIRE FIGHTING
With portable extinguishers or fixed fire fighting equipment (manually or automatically
operated).

3.

SIGN AND TRAINING

Sign should be provided to identify action to be taken, means of escape and
location of fire fighting equipment. Training should be given in the use of systems
and equipment provided and to minimize panic.
3.1

4.

MEANS OF ESCAPE IN CASE OF FIRE

(a)

The purpose of a means of escape is to enable people confronted by

fire to proceed in the opposite direction to an exit away from the fire
through a store exit, a protected staircase and/or a final exit to ground
level in open air away from the building. Any means of escape must
not rely on rescue facilities from the fire service.

(b)

In the presence of fire, panic and the urge to get away are natural
reactions. Information about the action to take and where possible
practice in that action are essential to ensure the optimum response in
the event of fire.

(c)

Copies of notices giving sample-guidance on what to do in the event of

fire should be displayed in all workplaces and premises where persons
could be at risk from fire. The details of each notice which may be
written as a safety sign will vary and depend upon the layout, fire risk
and circumstances likely to be encountered. For this reason they
should be specially written. Diagrams of layouts showing the means of
escape in each case will be helpful.

EFFECTIVE HOUSEKEEPING FOR FIRE SAFETY

Workers should be held accountable for their areas at the end of their shift. Here
are the precautions to take :
(a)
(b)

(c)

Combustible materials should be present in work areas only in quantities

required for the job. They should be removed to a designated, safe storage
area at the end of each work day.
Quick-burning and flammable materials should be stored only in designated
locations. Such locations always should be away from ignition sources and
have special fire-extinguishing provisions. Covered metal receptacles are
best.
Vessels or pipes containing flammable liquids or gases must be airtight. Any
spills should be cleaned up immediately.

Workers should be careful not to contaminate their clothing with flammable
liquids. If contamination does occur, these individuals must be required to
change their clothing before continuing to work.
Passageways and fire doors should be unobstructed.
Material must never block automatic sprinklers or be piled around fire
extinguisher locations or sprinkler and standpipe controls.

FIRE PREVENTION INSPECTION

Fire prevention inspection needs will vary from facility to facility and department.
However, all fire prevention inspections have four basic goals:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

6.

Minimize the size of fire by ensuring that combustible and flammable material
storage controlled.
Control ignition sources to reduce the possibility of fire.
Make sure that fire protection equipment is operational.
Make sure that personnel exit facilities are maintained.

FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

(a)
(b)
(c)

The most important audit items will be determined that the fixed fire protection
equipment is on. The checklist items should include the fire protection water
valves in your department which should be locked or supervised.
Other fire protection systems are normally controlled by electrical panels
which can be audited to ensure that the systems are on and that no trouble
signals are showing.
Automatic sprinkler patterns can be audited by making sure that there are at
least 18 in. between products and the sprinkler detector.
