good readers use the sequence of events in a storys plot to analyze their
influence on future events
signal words of sequence of events include first, next, then, finally, after
authors set events in a specific order so that the story makes sense and it is
clear how everything happens in the story

Vocabulary Strategy: Synonyms


synonyms are words that have the same or similar meaning
Examples: happy (glad, content), jump (hop, bounce, pounce), cold (icy,
freezing, frigid)
synonyms are often used in analogies (ex. find : locate as hurry : rush)
Grammar: Possessive Nouns
possessive nouns are nouns that show ownership (shown with an apostrophe)
add an s to singular nouns to make them possessive (ex. the boys stomach
boy boys)
when a plural noun ends with s, simply add an apostrophe to make it

possessive (ex. the trucks sirens


trucks trucks)
when a plural noun does not end with s, add s to make it possessive
(ex. the childrens pets

children childrens)
