Types of prayer
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints
(Ephesians 6:18, KJV)
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known unto God
(Phil 4:6, KJV)
The prayer of faith
Every prayer must be based on faith. Mark 11: 23-24 - For verily I say unto you, That whosoever
shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt
in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have
whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them (KJV) i.e. we can pray for anything provided
we truly believe it and have no doubt that it will surely happen.
This is where the devil attacks. After we have prayed believing in God he brings doubt into our
hearts.
James 5:13-16 - Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any
sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him
with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise
him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to
another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a
righteous man availeth much. (KJV)
The prayer of petition/supplication
A petition is a request that is made earnestly and in humility.
1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments,
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight (KJV)
1 John 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according
to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we
have the petitions that we desired of him (KJV)
This is a prayer in which we humbly approach God, pleading for His mercy.
Isa 43:26 Put me in remembrance:let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified
(KJV)
The prayer of agreement
Mat 8:17 - For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them. It helps to have a fired or brother/sister in Christ who we can tun to and is able to pray with
us.
Praying in the Spirit
Rom 8:26-27 - Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:for we know not what we should pray
for as we ought:but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he
maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God

The prayer of intercession

This prayer involves standing in the gap for others including leaders and those in authority.
In 1Tim 2:1-4 Paul teaches about the importance of praying for leaders and those in authority.
Eze 22:30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the
gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it:but I found none.
The prayer of warfare
All the prayer types above involve engaging God on behalf of ourselves or others. The prayer of
warfare is different as it requires us to stand against the enemy. we cannot afford to maintain a
neutral stand.
Eph 6:10-13 - Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the
whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle
not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Prayer of thanksgiving
This is the hallmark of all prayers. We are thanking him for what he has done, for what he is doing
and for what he is yet to do. This kind of prayer does not involve asking for anything or engaging in
warfare against the enemy. This is the only prayer in which we minister to God and serve him and
are not using God to minister to us. Acts 13:2 - As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy
Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
