Amos Chapters 5-6

Seek ye me and you will live.

Dr John C McEwan

The Lamentation

Verses 1 3
It is a lamentation because the
doom of Israel is settled due to their persistent
paganism. They will be culled to 10% - only a tithe of
them will remain alive.
Verses 4 6
They must seek the Lord, not
cling to their fake religion. There is no security in
their religion, only in their Saviour and their Creator.
The doom of the north is settled, but individuals who
repent will be saved. They will enter Judah, the
northern 10 tribes becoming part of the southern 2.

Accept the Saviour or face the Day

of the Lord

Verses 7 15
The Lord alone has the
creators power, for he is the creator; there is
no other with such power to save and rebuild.
Psalms 2:1-12. They have abused the poor
and weak, but even then they can be delivered.
Verses 16 20 They have their Wailing Wall
now, exactly as Amos warned them, for they
turned from the Lord and did not return.

Flee Hypocrisy

Verses 21 27
Hypocrisy can only bring
further judgment, for only truth in the heart and life
delivers. Its not a song service they need but solemn
prayer for deliverance.
Ch 6 - Verses 1 6
It is dangerous to be at ease
in Zion when the Lord has called you to service. It is
foolishness to feast, drink and sing Psalms, when
there is a need to afflict the soul due to unconfessed
sin. James 5:1-6.

Captivity to Assyria is the direct

result of captivity to Idols

Verses 7 8
Their fate is sealed now,
and they will go into captivity; their luxurious
life styles are testimony against them.
Verses 9 11
They will not even be able
to bury the dead, and will be fearful to give
proper burial and proper prayer.
Verses 12 14 They have been as hard as rock
to the words of God, so they are given over to
men even harder than they are.
