Digital Age Literacy in the Classroom
WIth the fast pace of ever emerging educational technologies, teachers have to
invest a lot of time to stay current in the classroom. As new tech tools become widely
available to students, teachers must seek out new ways to instill in their students the value
of learning how to learn. Equipping students with the knowledge to successfully navigate
and assess information online is essential as they learn how to be successful, digitallyliterate learners.
As fairly new teacher, my role in the classroom has developed as Ive worked to
meet the needs of my students. My understanding of what a successful classroom should
look like has changed dramatically over the last few years. I see the importance of
teaching specific knowledge and skill sets that will assist students and help them to be
successful, digitally literate citizens for the 21st century. With growing access to
information through learning devices such as tablets and smartphones, students can now
take charge during the learning process as they actively research, synthesize, and present
information found online.
While my understanding of current educational technologies has changed, my
view of the importance of education has stayed the same. I still believe that each learner
is capable and should be given the chance to receive support in their learning.
Differentiation for specific learner needs should still take place as I work to support each

student in the learning process. Careful assessment of individual learner growth should
take place in each lesson. Students should be able to be engaged in the learning process
as they come in to my classroom each day. And the amazing thing is, when used
effectively, technology can help students to achieve all of the areas mentioned. My
understanding of technology will help to open new possibilities in the classroom as I
work to create a classroom environment where students can use technologies to their
support them in the learning process.
Taking part in APUs Digital Teaching and Learning Masters of Ed program has
helped to prepare me to effectively integrate technology into my classroom. I have
gained a better understanding of the existing ed tech tools available and Ive gained
insights on how to successfully use these technologies. Ive also had the opportunity to
build my professional learning network as I connected with others involved in ed tech
through Twitter and Google+. During my time in this program, Ive also gained
confidence in my ability to access and integrate technology in my lessons. As a teacher, I
hope to pass this confidence on to my students as I provide them with opportunities to
develop and learn how be successful, digitally literate citizens.
