Mrs. West Art- Studio 313- Expectations Syllabus


BEGINNING ART
Beginning Art is designed to reinforce and build on knowledge and skills developed at the elementary and middle school
levels. It is the foundation level for art study throughout high school. The course is primarily devoted to deliberate and
systematic presentations of various art processes, procedures, theories, and historical developments. Students will have
experiences in producing two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks. The course emphasizes the study of the
elements of art and principles of design, color theory, vocabulary, art criticism, art history, and safety in the art room. The
approach to art experiences during this time is experimental in terms of materials. Students are provided a strong
foundation in design, drawing and vocabulary in a teacher-structured environment. Problem solving and decision-making
are emphasized throughout Art Foundations.
Rules and Procedures:
1. Stay in Assigned Seat
2. Always bring a pencil and your art notebook to class.
3. Arrive to class on time. North Pitt High Schools tardy policy will be followed.
4. Use the Restrooms before arriving to class during class changes.
5. Eating in class is prohibited. Students should dispose of all drinks (besides water), candy, or
food of any kind before entering the classroom (this includes snacks).
6. Be ready to work/learn every class period. Days may vary in activities including: sketchbook,
introductions, demonstrations, projects, quiz/test, worksheets, and/or drawing days.
7. Be RESPECTFUL. Always listen when a teacher/substitute/peer is speaking. Do not mark/destroy
others artwork/belongings. Be appropriate, including language, personal space, and drawing content.
8. Keep noise level at a low volume. Students that must be spoken to often will be sent out to SMC and
receive
a referral for classroom disruption as well as a call home.
Safety Rules and Procedures:
1.Students are NOT allowed to go into any storage area, including the teachers desk and storage closet.
2.Students are NOT allowed to use/touch the paper cutter. Ask the teacher for assistance.
3.Use materials appropriately. If misuse occurs, the student will lose their privilege of this material.
4. Clean up all areas at the end of the each class period. Take special care to wash tools such as
paint brushes and tables. Return art materials to their proper locations. Place projects within your class
art folder. Students will not leave the classroom till this is done satisfactory.

-Items left on the tables will be thrown away.

Daily Class Procedures:


1. Come in quietly and sit in your assigned seat.
2. Write down daily vocabulary word and definition in your composition notebook.
3. Complete daily warm-up drawing assignment on board in your daily drawing notebook.
4. Look on class website for todays assignment.
5. Listen to the teacher for instructions.
6. Have ONE person from the table retrieve supplies for the project from the supply table if needed.
7. Work on your project/assignment quietly throughout the ENTIRE class time.
8. Clean up your space (at the sound of the class alarm)- placing all materials/projects away in the proper
location. (items left out will be thrown out).
9. Sit quietly in your seat at your table and wait until you are dismissed from class.
10. You will NOT line up at the door to wait for the bell.

GRADING POLICY:

Art Projects and Tests..40%


Classroom Assignments (includes quizzes, worksheets, sketches, and drawings).....20%
Daily Grades (includes following all rules and expectations, being prepared and participation)......20%
Sketchbook Assignments (given weekly)......15%
Homework and Progress Reports..5%
Projects:
Projects due dates must be met. Due dates are located on the website for each assignment. All students will be
introduced to projects together as a class on the same day. Introductions and demonstrations will be given as part of the
projects. Students will receive project objectives and a rubric for each project. Students will also draw sketches prior to
the beginning of every project. Projects must be photographed in three stages and uploaded to the digital portfolio to be
considered for a grade.
Each project will be critiqued using a written self-evaluation as well as a group critique at the end of each project.
If a student does not complete a project in the allotted time, the student must complete the project outside of class time
and turn in the project no later than 1 week late. Points will be deducted for late projects.
First 15:
Every day we will begin class with an assignment called the First 15. Information from an artistic time period
will be displayed on the screen at the front of the room. This information will change each day, but will be in the same
time period (this will change weekly). You will have 15 minutes to sketch/write/complete the information in your
sketchbook, you will be quizzed on this information every Friday. Students must bring their sketchbook to class each
day.
Daily Vocabulary:
A list of the daily vocabulary words for the current week is located on the website. You will complete the daily
vocabulary words in your sketchbook according to the directions given to you ( also on the website). Vocabulary pages are
due on Fridays and will be part of the Friday quiz as well. Students must bring their sketchbook to class each day.
Pop Quizzes can/will be given at anytime throughout the semester.
Sketchbook Assignments:
All students must have a sketchbook/binder for sketchbook assignments. Sketchbook drawing and mini
project/exercises are given on the first day of the week a student has class ( usually Mondays). Sketchbook assignments will
be worked on throughout the week. The student is responsible to turn in the assignment by uploading photos to the digital
portfolio website.
All missing sketchbook assignments will be given a zero. If a student is absent, the student is still responsible
for making up the missed assigned sketchbook assignment, along with any other assignment/exercise/project. All will
be posted to the class website.
