Type of Project

This project is a three-week unit in which students will read and


analyze Elie Wiesels Night and learn about World War II and the
Holocaust. During this unit, students will work collaboratively in teams
as they research, write, discuss, and present using Keynote and Google
Sites. Students will learn valuable intercommunication skills as they
establish individual roles, assign specific tasks, and set clear guidelines
for each member in their team.
Goal of the Portfolio
The goal of this portfolio is to establish a unit that incorporates a wide
spectrum of technologies and allows students to build skills in literacy
and communication as they explore The Holocaust and World War II.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to read, analyze, and discuss story, themes, and
literary elements in Night
Students will write and publish formal academic responses using
proper writing conventions.
Students will be able to research, synthesize, and present information
about World War II and the Holocaust.
Students will explore the causes and consequences of World War II and
the Holocaust
Students will be able to use technologies, including Keynote and
Google Sites
Outline
Day 1:
o Students complete a Quick Write (What is The Holocaust? List
everything you know about this subject).
o Teacher will present a Keynote on World War II.
o Students will create a study guide for the Night vocabulary terms
using Quizlet (www.quizlet.com).
Day 2:
o Students are put into teams and assigned a topic related to
World War II and the Holocaust.
o Students will create a team plan of action as they assigned roles,
tasks, and deadlines for their research and presentation.
o Students will research their topic and share this information on a
team Google doc (www.drive.google.com).
o Students will compile a list of credible sources used during their
research.
Day 3:

o Students will finish their research and create a team Works Cited
page on Google docs.
o Students will create a team Keynote (3 to 4 Keynote slides per
team member).
o Students will check their team Keynote and make any necessary
changes. Teams will spend ten minutes practicing their
presentation.

Day 4:
o Each team will present their Keynote to the class as the audience
takes notes on their laptops.
o Students will share their Keynotes with classmates and use these
presentations as a study guide during the unit.
o Students will do a timed Quick Write for section two and three of
Night. In teams, students will discuss the reading and highlight
major events in the text.

Day 5:
o Teacher will give a brief overview of tone and Wiesels use of
tone in Night. As a class, students will discuss specific quotes
from section four and five of Night that they felt conveyed the
authors tone.
o Students will complete a Quick Write journal entry about a
passage from the memoir and analyze the tone.
o Students will use their written responses to create a word cloud
bank using Tagxedo (www.tagxedo.com ). Students will share
their written journal entries and word clouds with two other
students.

Day 6:
o Teacher will introduce students to Google Sites
(https://sites.google.com).
o Students will create an individual website, selecting a theme and
adding tabs to their Google Site. Students will post their Quick
Writes on their website and share the website with the teacher.

Day 7:
o Students will do a Quick Write for section six and seven of the
book and post their response to their website.
o Teacher will introduce the upcoming Socratic Seminar and review
the format, student roles, and expectations for behavior.
o Students will review their notes and passages from Night as they
create five questions for the Socratic discussion.

Day 8:
o Students will briefly meet with their teams to prepare for the
Socratic Seminar. Students will then arrange their desks in a
circle.
o Teacher will post the list of behavior expectations for students
during the Socratic discussion and review the Socratic format.
o Students will take turns being the discusser, note-taker, and text
expert in three, ten-minute sessions.
o Teacher will observe students and raises questions to students
when necessary.

Day 9:
o Students will write a brief reflection about their experience
during the Socratic Seminar.
o Students will discuss and create a team website. Students will
include their Keynotes, word clouds, written reflections, notes
from the Socratic Seminar, and a Works Cited Page. Students will
incorporate digital media (images, videos, and music) that serves
to enhance their Google Site.

Day 10:
o Students will spend time finishing up their websites. Teams will
check their website for any spelling or grammar issues and make
any necessary edits.
o Teams will spend the last ten minutes of class practicing their
team website presentations.

Day 11:
o Students will present their team websites to the class,
highlighting their format and content.
o After each presentation, the audience will give feedback to their
peers by raising their hands and offering comments on content,
format, and aesthetics.

Day 12
o Students will compose four short essays in a timed classroom
environment. Essay prompts will be related to Night and the
Holocaust.
o Students must use proper writing conventions and include at
least ten of the vocabulary words from the unit in their essays.
o Teacher will post a timer to allow students to help students pace
themselves during the writing process.
