‘THE RETURN OF
FLEETWOOD MAC.
Amid criticism, both for and against
their 1987-1988 U.S. tour, Fleetwood Mac

Their moscrecentalburn, Tango in the
Night, drew attention from almost every
part of the entertainment indusuy. Their
fans viewed it as the most recent expres-
sion of their artistic maturing, while
those who are less enthusiastic saw it as
snglow of a once-great band. The
ing criticism came from Phoenix’
‘own New Times, in which they referred
to Fleetwood Mac in rather ugly terms.
How ironic that the city in which Stevie
Nicks resides would subject her to stich
viscious attack. She is, uncoubiedly, the
Valley's frst lady of rock and roll.
‘The bruntof thenegative criticism was
directed at the departure of one of Mac's
founding members, Lindsey Bucking-
ham, just prior to their tour announce
ments. This was well-founded concern,
Buckingham had either writen or co-
‘written the majority oftheir hits,
Then the announcement came that
Fleetwood Mac had hired two guitarists
to replace Buckingham—Rick Vito and
Billy Burnette. Ac first, this was seen as a
desperate gamble that very well might
have ended in disappointment.
However, in fact, all members of the
band have expressed interest in heading
for therecording studi somerimeafter the

Their December 3 concert at Compton
‘Terrace will not rate as one of the great
super concerts of the 80s, However, they
played strong and tight, and most ofall,
together. The concert opened with a drift
down memory lane—beginning with
some tracks off Rumours, at which time
they moved into the White Album, titled
simply Fleetwood Mac. Allol thesesongs,
like Go Your Own Way, Say You Love
Me, and Gold Dust Woman were per
formed by all members to rival the al
bums.
Towards the middle of the show, they
moved into some tracks from Tango in
the Night, which sounded very good.
What followed was a "show within a
show,” courtesy of Mick Fleetwood. By
attaching electronic drum pads toareas of
hisbody, and drumming on them as if he
‘was behind hisdrum kit, hecreateda very
unusual: sound. Mick Fleetwood may
very well be a step aside from what one
would consider ‘normal,’ but in his own

Being that I was very close tothe front
