Bata Shoe Museum Field Trip

time): 120 minutes

Before Field Trip Instructions: Students will be asked to follow the instructions of
teachers during field trip. They will be asked to stay with their classmates and their
school group so they dont get lost. Teacher will tell students about the two
activities they will complete during the field trip. Since, for both activities, students
will be working in groups of 3-4, they will be asked to select their group members in
class. They will also be asked to being writing utensils with them in order to
complete the field trip activity handouts. This will also save time and avoid
confusions during field trip.
When the buses arrive, students will be asked to note down the bus numbers, in case
they have trouble finding the school bus. Inside the bus, all students will be handed
out the handouts for the activities. Even though they are working in groups, all
students are responsible to complete their handouts. After, they arrive at the Bata
Shoe Museum, teacher will ask students to stay in line until they arrive inside the
museum.
During Field Trip Instructions: After everybody has gathered in the main hall of
Bata Shoe Museum, teacher will tell students that they have 60 - 70 minutes to
complete the Picture Scavenger Hunt Activity and after they are finished, they will
be asked to meet in the main hall of the Bata Shoe Museum.
After students finish their first activity, they will be asked to complete the second
activity, which is making a Shoe Timeline. They will be given 50-60 minutes to
complete this activity.
After Field Trip Instructions: After students have finished their activities they
will be given time in bus and in class to fill in the missing information. After the field
trip they will be asked to hand in their completed handouts.

Description of Activity:
For this activity, students will be asked to complete the attached worksheet
(Worksheet 1). In the worksheet, they are provided with the pictures of shoes and
other artefacts present in the Bata Show Museum. Their task will be to locate these
artefacts and write down the name of the artefact, the time period to which these
objects belong, the culture represented by the artefact, materials used to make the
artefact, and to draw any patterns present on the artefact.
For example, students may choose to draw the bead patterns present on the
moccasins in the Inuit section of the First Nations exhibit.
To help the students complete the picture scavenger hunt they will be assisted by an
expert from the museum as part of the Hands-On Artefact Session
Hands-on Artefact Session:
As part of the guided program 1 hour session (cost of $6 per student), which is
organized by the Bata Shoe Museum, students will take part in a Hands-On
Artefact Session. In this session, students will get a chance to get a close look at
the objects present in the museum. They will be able to touch the objects while
the museum guides are explaining historical facts about the shoes to them.

For part 1 of this activity, students will pick a Canadian community represented
at the Bata Shoe Museum and make a timeline containing years and shoe
designs, and materials used to build the shoes. They will then answer the
questions present in the handout. These questions are designed to raise

awareness about the social and economic conditions of different communities at
different time periods.
Then they will compare the lifestyles of two different Canadian communities and
learn about the similarities and differences in the fashion and lifestyles of
different communities present in Canada.
