This course has been okay so far. I have been able to understand the material and I have done well on the
assessments. The material is challenging, but once I understand the concepts, it becomes a lot easier.

1/6/2015 10:18 AM

Chemistry has been a very hard class this year. It is a regular course, but sometimes it feels like honors. Since it
is regular, I feel like it should be manageable enough class so that I do not need a tutor. But, the topic is tough
and the tests are not only testing to see if you understand the information. There are questions that make one
think more, by applying, which is tough to do because the tests are so long, and each question takes a lot of
time, and because the topic is just hard! Also, our class size is so big, so with so many people, it can be a tough
learning environment.

1/6/2015 10:17 AM

This course has been very challenging and the material is hard to understand. Although by the time of the test I
finally understand the material, I don't think Mr. Erlandson understands that people struggle to understand the
material during class.

1/6/2015 10:15 AM

Chemistry has been one of the more challenging courses because it combines the sciences and maths- my two
weaker subjects. However, though my grade in the course aren't as high as I'd hope, I feel Mr. Erlandson has
been very sensitive to my needs as he is always available to meet after school and is very good at explanations
one on one.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

My experience in this course has been, overall, good. Although Mr. Erlandson's type of teaching took me a long
time to adjust to, I have learned a lot. The course started out rough because, unlike previous year, we were
asked to learn and understand the information before we came to class. Sometimes we were even asked to
complete homework on topics we hadn't covered yet. However, I slowly came to learn that as long as I spent
time on the reading and the homework, the topics we covered in class would make a lot more sense.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

This course has beena big challenge. There is a lot of difficult concepts and rather than having them explained, I
feel they are briefly gone over in class and I'm left in a state of confusion. I don't feel like this is an environment
where I can ask questions and go for extra help without feeling either looked down upon or being frustrated with.
Whenever a question is asked, the answer is re-explained the same exact way but I think the manner in which the
material is explained needs to be changed up a little because it does make sense to Mr. Erlandson and a couple
people, but it's not approached in a way that can be interpreted and understood by the whole class and getting an
explanation that makes more sense can be very frustrating and asking usually gets pushed to the side. I, and
other people are kind of scared to ask questions in class because we don't feel they are taken well. The
expectations for the test and what is going to be on it is never clear. Even when we do review, the test is a far
shoot from what we go over and a lot of it feels a little out of the blue or arbitaray compared to any hints or
review. We don't have enough guidence in class or through homework to be properly prepared in understanding.
WIth labs the expectations and the parts of the lab needed are always extremely blurry and it's so confusing
considering there doesn't seem to be one straight rubric or guide for any of them and it never says online or in
lab sheets what sections we need.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

This course is difficult in the sense that we have many skills to learn and later apply. It is although enjoyable and
requires a lot of focus.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

Chemistry is a hard course but Mr. E tells us exactly what we need to do, however sometimes this is hard to
understand. He has one way of teaching and if you don't understand it then he gets frustrated. During class if you
ask certain questions he gets a little bit rude. But overall, he tries to make it easy for us.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

Overall, I have had a good experience in chemistry this year. I feel that the thing that helps me the most in this
class that is different from what we did last year is reading the chapter before we go over it as a class. By doing
this, I understand the material a little bit before learning it.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

10

Chemistry is one of those courses that is absolutely ridiculously hard and completely unnecessary for real life
situations. That makes it extremely hard because most of the information is foreign. It is really hard for me to
understand this course. The concepts are hard to understand. I pay 150 a week for a chemistry tutor, meet with
Mr. Erlandson, and try to do my homework, however I still do not do well on tests. Mr. Erlandson no doubt, is a
kind man however I don't think he explains the material enough and does not explain it clearly. He is not a patient
person, so when people ask questions he gets frustrated easily. He pick favorites in the class based on who gets
it best and who is just too scared to ask questions. I constantly am scared that I have a C in this course because
it is not just hard, but it is intimidating. Whenever I have a chem test, I meet with my tutor multiple times a week
and study extremely hard for long as well as late hours. This class has been awful for me and I believe should be
made less hard or completely ridden of.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

11

I have learned a lot in chemistry. Mr. Erlandson has a unique teaching style that I have came to learn and
appreciate. With this experience it is easy to get a grasp of the hard, and often complicated, ideas he is trying to
teach us. If you are a willing participant much can be accomplished in his class.

1/6/2015 10:12 AM

12

Although many find chemistry to be a difficult subject in general, I feel as though Mr. Erlandson has done a good
job explaining the material clearly. I feel like I know what to expect in terms of skills on the test although I feel like
if he gave us more help on what to expect in terms of if questions would show up as a multiple choice question or
an opened ended question that would be helpful to students. Overall I have had a really positive experience in
this class.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

13

Chemistry is a hard class to begin with. It is hard to separate the teacher with the subject but in all fairness I think
Mr. Erlandson does a good job of teaching the class. It isn't his fault that a lot of us are having trouble with it, but
it would be great if he slowed down on concepts and made the learning process smoother.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

14

I think that this course is very good at explaining the concepts that we need to know, but I would like it if we did a
little more examples in class.

1/6/2015 10:10 AM

15

Although my experience in this class has improved, sometimes the material is very unfair because it is so
difficult.

1/6/2015 10:09 AM

16

This is definitely one of my favorite courses.

1/6/2015 10:08 AM

17

My experience in this course has been very positive. I greatly enjoy the course material, and learning Chemistry. I
think Mr. Erlandson is an amazing teacher, and he explains things very clearly and a student will understand
completely if they pay attention and do the assigned work. He's also very good at answering questions.

Q4 How effectively do the assignments, inclass activities and labs help you
understand the material and develop your
skills? Please be specific.

Most classes, we spend a lot of time reviewing the homework. This is because usually, no one understands it
and I think it would be more beneficial if Mr. Erlandson taught us the material and then gave us homework to
practice it (instead of giving us new material in the homework and then explaining it afterwards). This would allow
class time to be more productive. The labs are interesting because they connect to the information we are
learning but don't entirely address the key concepts.

1/6/2015 10:18 AM

The textbook reading can be tough to understand, partly because a lot of it is math based, and it is hard to read a
textbook that tries to teach math. I think it would be beneficial to learn some of the material before the homework,
because since we go over the homework in class, and a lot of us are confused, we end up learning it after, and
spending most of the class time going over homework. It would be beneficial to learn new material.

1/6/2015 10:17 AM

The labs help me most to understand what we are learning because it puts what we are learning in perspective.
The lab reports are less helpful because i feel like i am repeating information and not understanding it. The
textbook reading and problems don't feel very effective because we read these before Mr. Erlandson teaches the
lesson, which makes it hard to understand. We typically spend our entire review class on one topic even when
we say we will review a few of them.

1/6/2015 10:15 AM

The assignments tend to leave me confused because the textbook is weirdly worded sometimes, and things
make more sense to me in kind of a hands-on and auditory way than just reading. The In-class activities, such as
labs, have been extremely helpful. I find that they tend to reinforce materials we are learning and give great
practice equations and an environment to have them explained (sometimes even kinetically with models such as
the bonding atoms lab)

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

Assignments are very effective in established the core concepts Mr.Erlandson discusses in class. Labs and inclass activities. even more so at time because they normally allow us to further our understanding in a specific
topic. They help us develop skills of applying what we have been learning in class to real life. In-class activities
are also great at helping us gain a broader perspective on a subject and even relate it back to others we've
already covered.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The homework doesn't generally help. I think it would be better if we did the lesson in class and then the
homework so instead of leaving a bunch of question marks, we can get more out of the assignment.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The homework assignments give me a somewhat understanding of the material. I have found that the labs are
what has been more effective in my understanding of the material because I am able to hands on experience
what we learned.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

In-class assignments are mostly just taking notes which is fine. But we do the homework first and then take notes
on what we read. This isn't helpful because during the homework we are very confused because we haven't
learnt the material and Mr. E often has a different way of teaching than the book. It would be more helpful if we
learnt first then did homework as a review rather than teaching ourselves and the class would be a review. The
labs are difficult and we don't go over them in that much detail. However, in class while we are doing them he
helps us.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

The assignments help me because I find that the homework assignments are very similar to the problems on the
test, so those help me when I am studying.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

10

Mr. Erlandson gives us a lot of homework but it doesn't help. He doesn't explain much clearly so the homework
is confusing.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

11

Since we have had a variety of assessments, from in class short labs to take home lab reports we have been able
to grow our skills in many ways. Recently we did an activity where we had to identify an unknown substance by
testing various liquids and the way in which they reacted and their products. This is crucial to our understanding
of the ideas presented in class.

1/6/2015 10:12 AM

12

For me the most helpful in-class activities are simply going over the homework because that is when I am able to
clarify and understand concepts that maybe I was not able to process the previous day in class or when I was
doing the homework. Other than that, other in class activities that help me understand the material and develop
my skills are the labs and just taking notes.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

13

Lab reports are tricky in this class if you don't fully and completely understand the topic (which in fairness is
essentially the students job) but overall theres a good variety of assignments to help us understand the material
and develop our skills.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

14

I think that the labs do a very good job at giving us hands on experience with chemistry and the assignments do
as well. I just wish that we took a little more time in class to really understand them at a deeper level.

1/6/2015 10:10 AM

15

The assignments we do in class sometimes leave me confused and frustrated, because there is so much
material crammed into such a short amount of time. The labs sometimes help, but are also quite tedious other
times.

1/6/2015 10:09 AM

16

The assignments are very helpful and help me with understanding the material we learned in class.

1/6/2015 10:08 AM

17

The assignments and in-class activities and labs do certainly help us understand the material and develop the
skills. Activities such as the molecular models allowed us to get a greater understanding of the content, with a
more hands-on approach.

been least effective for you about this
instructor's teaching?

Date

The powerpoints have been very effective. However the order that we learn (as discussed above) is not effective
and forces me to teach myself the material rather than him teaching me.

1/6/2015 10:18 AM

Mr. Erlandson is happy to meet with his students to discuss their personal needs, which is great. He also
understands that the subject is tough. He makes powerpoints and posts them online, which is very helpful. I think
that he should post homework 2 days in advanced, if possible, instead of one, because sometimes it is nice to get
ahead, or know what is coming up.

1/6/2015 10:17 AM

Mr. Erlandson teaches better one on one than he does in class. I have met with him a few times and that is when
i best understand the material. in class he tends to repeat the same things over and over when we don't
understand something and that doesn't help clarify it. If i don't understand something, it doesn't help to hear the
exact same thing a different time.

1/6/2015 10:15 AM

Most effective about Mr. Erlandson's teaching is definitely that he waits after class or school to meet and explain
subjects in depth. This has helped me tremendously throughout the year. Also, he always replies to emails and
questions about assignments or labs promptly. Least effective is probably something that is influenced by the
class. We have a large class, there is literally not a single open seat in the classroom, and 90% of them talk
through the lessons- while they are being taught. Mr. Erlandson tends to have to pause and he's a little snarky in
his discipline (it's funny though). I don't mind it because if you just listen and come to class on time and prepared,
nothing happens but I find many members of my class can't seem to handle the environment so rather than
listening there's a lot of whispering and complaining. Again, this is not really Mr. Erlandsson's problem, nor
something he can stop- as he has tried- but it is very disruptive and I would say it hinders the ability to learn in
this class. Also, Mr. Erlandson tends to post homework the day before it's due. This is fine because he usually
posts it early in the morning or while we're in class, it can just be a little frustrating if I had tried to get ahead
earlier in the week.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

Mr.Erlandson is most effective at his one-on-one meetings. Whenever I meet with him, I feel like he is able to
directly address what I am confused about or do not understand and explain everything in a way that I can
understand easily. As a contrast, what is least effective is his teaching in class. Because we have such a big
class, he seems to lose his patience with us sometime and even has trouble keeping order in the class.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The most effective thing has been the Jeapordy game we played once but I find my questions are submissed in
meetings and it's really hard to get a clear answer.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The most effective thing about Mr.Erlandson's teaching is that he is cheerful and willing to respond to questions.
The least effective thing is that we have to read for homework and I feel that if we learned the material first and
then did the homework it would be more productive.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

We have a large class so teaching so many people can get stressful, so during class he doesn't really know how
to handle us; that would be a weakness. He often repeats the same thing and doesn't listen to exactly what a
question is, and snaps. However, he is really good one on one and always always makes time to meet with us
and explain the info rmation which is good.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

The most effective has been reading the chapter the night before so I can have a better understanding of the
material in class. There really hasn't been least effective part of the course.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

10

The jeporady that we played really helped me review for the test. Mr. erlandson is nice. Otherwise he needs
improvement.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

11

His bluntness and his ability to take a complicated issue and morph it into an easier, more attainable concept.

1/6/2015 10:12 AM

12

I like the teaching method where we take notes as he explains the concepts and we are able to ask questions if
we do not understand something.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

13

I think he should maybe take more time teaching it like a math class, and explain the steps and concepts behind
each problem thoroughly. He does however, do a good job of keeping the class interesting and manageable
even though its most times it is hard to grasp.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

14

The in class assignment where we were building atoms really helped me as I tend to be someone who learns
better by doing things. again I think that we should just take a little more time in class to further understand the
concepts being taught.

1/6/2015 10:10 AM

15

Effective-- the most effective thing for me has been meeting with Mr. Erlandson outside of class. Ineffective-- he
does not allow students to formulate ideas outloud, which sometimes furthers my confusion in trying to grasp the
material.

1/6/2015 10:09 AM

16

Going to Mr. Erlandson for extra help is very helpful.

1/6/2015 10:08 AM

17

Everything about Mr. Erlandson's teaching has been effective, especially how he explains the content and
answers questions. I wouldn't say anything has been ineffective.

Q6 Which labs were most helpful? least
helpful?

I found the emission spectrum lab really interesting. The density lab was the first lab we did in this course and I
remember I was very confused and I had to redo the lab multiple times.

1/6/2015 10:18 AM

All of the labs have been very helpful because they all have a big part of the chapter.

1/6/2015 10:17 AM

the density lab was the most helpful because it taught us so many different things that we needed for the rest of
the term. some of the non-formal labs were not very helpful because they weren't very clear.

1/6/2015 10:15 AM

The labs which were most helpful were the labs in which we found precipitates formed by chemical reactions
because it gave us many opportunities to practice with balancing equations. Also, the labs in which we used the
atom/bond models were useful because they gave a hands-on/visual idea of how the bonding worked.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

One of the most helpful labs this year was the emission spectra lab and the one of the least helpful was the
density lab.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

Most helpful labs were ones like the lab where we had to talk about isotopes in the discussion because it direcly
related to the material and we learned how to apply it and the one with Propanol and Butanol etc. but most of the
others feel like busy-work that have a very broad connection to the info that usually isn't explain which is why it's
never really fair for the test material when it is on the tests. I don't blame the teacher for this because I don't think
he chooses the labs but I think explaining the connection to the material more would help.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The most helpful lab was when we did the program in logpro it actually kept me organized and the least effective
was most likely where we had to find the substance and see the reactions.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The Qualitative Analysis lab, the one completed by our selves was very unhelpful because it was not only
confusing and hard but Mr. E wouldn't answer questions and it did not serve as a review for what we were
learning. All of the other labs that we did are fine but do not exactly help us learn for the tests.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

The most helpful lab to me was the most recent lab we did, the qualitative analysis lab. The least helpful was the
temperature change in alcohols lab.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

10

The most helpful lab was when we guessed the substance that we were given.

1/6/2015 10:13 AM

11

All of them were very helpful to understanding the concepts at the time.

1/6/2015 10:12 AM

12

The most helpful lab was the smaller lab that we did most recently where we had to observe what happened
when we made two liquids react and then had to balance the reactions because I really felt that seeing real life
examples of reactions helped me not only practice the skill of balancing the reaction but also see if happen in real
life.

1/6/2015 10:11 AM

13

I think the light emission spectra lab wasn't very helpful because the problems in the lab occurred on the test and
too many of us were a little thrown off by it. I think that the states of matter lab was effective because we could
visualize solubility rules.

I thought that the lab quiz/test that we had at the end of the year really pushed us to master the concepts learned
in class. It was successful in that we learned a lot from it, but in turn many of us did not do well on it because
instead of learning it fully in class we had to do it on our own.

Non formal labs in which we were given the opportunity to do practice problems were the most helpful. The least
helpful lab was the one with light and the different spectra of light, because I felt it did not relate to what we had
learned in class.

I don't specifically remember what labs we had but the labs that helped me most were the small labs that we did
after completing 1 or 2 assignments.

I think all the labs were helpful, except for the one where we mixed the mixtures/compounds and observed the
reactions. For some reason, I just didn't find that one too helpful. But that's just personal, and there's nothing
wrong with it as a lab.

Q7 Was the average workload for this
course reasonable?

The workload is pretty reasonable, but Mr. Erlandson usually posts the homework pretty late and since I try to get
ahead over the weekends, this makes it a lot harder.

Since I sometimes have trouble understanding the topic, the workload can be a lot, because it can take a long
time. But, usually it is pretty fair. Sometimes, there is too much reading, because it can be overwhelming to read
and be able to understand so much information in just one night.

sometimes the textbook reading sections were very long and other times they were ok. sometimes we were
assigned ALOT of questions but other times we were only assigned 4 or 5.

The average workload is basically equal to most classes. Sometimes the readings can be very long, and he has
a tendency to put a lot of questions on the homework's which are most confusing. For the most part, the reason
the homework takes up a lot of time is simply because it is challenging material and takes longer than most to
understand and apply on your own, but in-class we review the homework and he gives us answer keys so it helps
to explain it much more than if it was just reading with no questions.

On average, I feel like I spend more time on homework that I should. Some nights, we are asked to complete a
whole chapter's worth of reading which takes 2-3 hours. However, the workload has become more and more
reasonable and we are no longer asked to complete so much reading in one night so I do not believe this is a
problem any longer.

Yes.

1/6/2015 10:14 AM

The workload was reasonable but it was a lot of information and applying multiple skills.

The workload is fine, but if we are not taught the lesson before then the homework becomes long and painful
because we do not understand it. Overall chemistry takes me forty minutes per night.

The workload was reasonable, every night we would have a reading and then homework problems that probably
took a half an hour, so it wasn't too bad.

The tests are ridiculous but everything else is fine

I often find myself spending over an hour on the chemistry homework a night. I read the passages but then to
actually grasp the material I have to go back and re read and re analyze. If there was less homework I think the
workload would be much more manageable.

Yes I think that its very reasonable.

yes. its pretty standard and structured and expected. Theres a lot of textbook reading, but its worth it in the long
run.

Personally I felt like I was playing catchup for a good portion of the term. I know many people who were able to
handle the workload, but for me I wish that we went a little bit slower.

The amount of homework we have is reasonable, but sometimes the labs ask for too much data and information,
which becomes very overwhelming and seems to be unreasonable.

The workload for this course is very reasonable however sometimes the homework takes a long time to
complete.
