Elements of Music:

MisterWives most popular songs in the running are currently, Reflections, Coffins, and Vagabond.

Instrumentation-

+Reflections:
-

Mandy Lee, William Hehir, and Etienne Bowler`s voice, electric guitar, acoustic guitar,
xylophone, drums, piano, and the accordion.

+Coffins:
-

Mandy Lee, William Hehir, and Etienne Bowler`s voice, electric guitar, xylophone, snare drum,
bass drum, guitar, maraca, and tambourine.

+Vagabond:
-

Mandy Lee, William Hehir, and Etienne Bowler`s voice, piano, percussion, electric guitar, guitar,
piano, tambourine, and alto saxophone.

Texture-

+Reflections:
In Reflections, a homophonic texture opens the music piece with Mandy singing a distant pitch by
herself with instrumentation accompaniment.
A homophonic texture is a kind of music texture with a principal melody and accompanying harmony, as
distinct from polyphony where two or more melodic lines are combined into a multivoiced texture.

+Coffins:
In Coffins, there is an obvious counterpoint texture which is shown when Mandy and the background
voices are singing at the same time as her. It means the combining in a single texture of two or more
melodic lines.

+Vagabond:
In Vagabond, there is another voice singing with Mandy at the same time. This shows a polyphonic
texture, where two or more melodic lines are combined into a multivoiced texture, as distinct from
monophonic where there is only a single line or melody without accompaniment.

Tempo+Reflections:
In Reflections, the tempo of the piece is steady and is somewhat slow and fast. The tempo Reflections
shows is Andante, which means moderately slow, at a walking pace.
76-108 per quarter note.

+Coffins:
In Coffins, the tempo of the piece is slow but speeds up a little bit in the middle of the piece. The tempo
Coffins show is Adagio, which means slow and stately.
66-76 per quarter note.

+Vagabond:
In Vagabond, the tempo of the piece is fast but picks up the same beat each time. The tempo Vagabond
shows is Allegretto, which means moderately fast, and upbeat.

120-132 per quarter note.

TimbreThe instruments with timbre are the piano which was played freely without independent bass line, and
percussion by hitting beaters, sticks, hands, etc., on different parts of the snare drum, bass drum, and
other percussion instruments.
TonalityAll of MisterWives songs have a major and minor tonality. They both have the same meaning, but its
the use of their twelve major and twelve minor keys as the tonal basis of music. It is took place mainly
during the 17th century.
HarmonyIn MisterWives song Reflections it ends off with a mini guitar solo, and in Coffins, it ends off with a
minor tonality.
Their song Vagabond ends off with a major triad on the piano. I could say that it shows the use of Tierce
de Picardie, which is a French term for Picardy third. It is the use of a major triad for the final cadence of
a composition in a minor key, thus converting expected minor chord into major and giving the ending a
greater sense of finality.
And example for this in the piece can be:
When they started off with the key of C minor, the expected chord, C-Eb-G, becomes eventually at the
end, C-E-G.
I can relate this part of Vagabond to Prelude and Fugue in C minor by Bach, because the harmony
altered to by the key of C minor.

Dynamics:
Origin

Inaugurated in Greece in the 19th century known as dunamis meaning power, it evolved into Dunamikos
in Greece then it evolved into dynamique by the French. Then years later it was translated to dynamic.
Meanings
The word dynamics has 5 definitions:
1. (Physics.) The branch of mechanics that deals
with the motion and equilibrium of systems under the action of forces, usually from outside the
system.
2. (Used within a plural verb) The motivating or driving forces, physical or moral, in any field.
3. (Used with a plural verb) the pattern or history of growth, change, anddevelopment in any field.
4. (Used with a plural verb) variation and gradation in the volume ofmusical sound.
5. (Used with a singular verb) psychodynamics.
However in the musical context the fourth definition would apt to the circumstances.
To embellish number fours definition: Dynamics are the volume in music. Example: Loud music = Forte,
Silent music= Piano, etc.
Examples using three songs
Vagabond
For reflections I would say that it contained the dynamics forte and meto piano and a meto forte. I
would say the overall song had a forte dynamic. However in the beginning of the song with Mandy Lees
voice the piece had the fprte dynamic. The meto forte dynamic then stopped until the first minute
which continued up to th 1 minute and 20 second count to then become, a meto piano dynamic with
the instruments, Mandy Lees voice and the backup singers voices. Then from 2 minutes and 10 seconds
to the 2 minutes and 30 seconds count with Mandy Lee singing in a high pitch the piee continued with
its meto forte. Then when the verse was building up to the chorus the pieces would go to its meto piano
dynamic which stopped for quite some time to continue once again at the end of the puece. Despite
those counts the rest of the piece continued in a forte dynamic

Reflections
For reflections I would say that the overall song is played in a forte dynamic. However, not all of the bars
in the song are in that dynamic. Naturally in the bars where vocalist Mandy Lee sang acapella the
dynamics of the song became meto forte. They gradually became louder because to hit a higher note,
some singers have to adjust their ambishor of their mouth. Then by performing in that action naturally
the note increased in dynamic, it accentuated. Then there were also those parts in the song where the
strumming and beat of percussion increased in volume whil Mandy Lees voice was in the state of a
crescendo.

Coffins
For the song Coffins, the whole piece is in the meteo piano key. I would think that because of all of the
minorchprds. However in the middle of the piece it starts to crescendo to then return to the normal
dynamic

Duration
First of all the noun duration came to be in about late English time. To be more precise it was spoken
with before the 19th century all the way to the 21st century (meaning the modern day). The word itself
came from old French from Medieval Latin. It started off as durare (meaning to last) to then become
durus (meaning hard) to finally become duration.
The word duration has 3 definitions
Definitions:
1. The length of time something continues or exists (often used with the).
2. Continuance in time.
3. (In the philosophy of Bergson) a temporal continuum, intuitively
known, within which the lan vital operates.

I would think that the first definition could be the most related to the musical context. Meaning it is
suitable to the music world.
The duration in musical terms: The duration in musical terms is the lengths of notes. For example the
beats of the notes in a measure
Vagabond

Throughout the whole piece Mandy Lees voice ( the main singer) and the other instruments in the piece
are in the half note, whole note and quarter note category. I would think this would occur due to the
minor chords. However as the song progresses the notes start to become in the eight note category. I
would think this because of the modern day pop mixture.

Reflections
It starts off with half and whole notes to give that effect of waking up. As the song progresses it starts to
become upbeat in the middle of the piece and only use eigth notes for thae rest of the song to then give
the effect of being in the modern era

Coffins
Due to the minor chords the overall song has half notes, whole notes and the fastest note they have is
quarter notes. I would think this because of the piano keys being played in the minor chords. I would
also think this would happen because of the tone of the singers voice.

Rhythm
First of all the word rhythm came to be in the mid-16th century. It was spoken meaning rhyme by greeks
who called it rhuthmos. Then from rhuthmos it became rhythme said by the French. ( Rhythme is
related to rhein meaning to flow ). Then later it turned to become Rhythym. The word Rhythym
became wildly popular during the mid-20th century.
The noun Rhythym has 7 definitions
One: Movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of abeat, accent, or the like.
Two: Music.
a. The pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the
occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats.
b. a particular form of this:
Duple rhythm; triple rhythm.

Three: Measured movement, as in dancing.

four:Art, Literature. a patterned repetition of a motif, formal element, etc.,at regular or irregular int
ervals in the same or a modified form.
five:The effect produced in a play, film, novel, etc., by the combination orarrangement of formal ele
ments, as length of scenes, speech anddescription, timing, or recurrent themes, to create movemen
t, tension, and emotional value in the development of the plot.
six:Prosody.
a. Metrical or rhythmical form; meter; cadence.
b. a particular kind of metrical form.
c. Metrical movement.

seven:The pattern of recurrent strong, and weak accents, vocalization andsilence, and the distributi
on and combination of these elements in speech.

In my opinion I would think that number two is the most precise because after all it has musical
terminology and it is similar to the actual definition
Real definition: The effect ( music) created by combining a variety of notes with different durations
Vagabond
This song has a cross rhythym overall. At the beginning of the piece with vocals and piano keys maching
most notes. Then into the piece a numerous amount of instruments come in with a cross rhythym.
Then 2/4 to the song vocals and the ride cymbals, crash cymbals and hi hats come into a cross rhythym.
Then near to 4/4 all of the previous instruments combine into a close harmony to almost sound
identic.
Reflection
I would say that there are cross Rhythyms and there are also Polyrhythms. But in this piece there are no
synocopations. I would say that the vocals and bass guitar strumming patterns follow a cross rhythym,
then as the song continues the drums start to join that rhythym. However from the beginning to the
middle of the piece the drums contain a polyrhythym until the middle of Reflections when the three
instruments strt to become in harmony.
Coffins

At the beginning there is a polyrhythm between vocals and belectrric guitar. Then from that piece on to
the end of the song numerous instruments start to join keeping the same type of rhythym.

Structure
The word structure comes from late Middle English. The word has come from latin or old French. In latin
the word has transposed from struere to structura (meaning to build). The word ha become popular
after the 20th century.
The noun structure has 7 definitions
1,mode of building, construction, or organization; arrangement of parts, elements, or constituents:
a pyramidal structure.
2.something built or constructed, as a building, bridge, or dam.
3.a complex system considered from the point of view of the wholerather than of any single part:
the structure of modern science.
4.anything composed of parts arranged together in some way; anorganization.
5.the relationship or organization of the component parts of a work of artor literature:
the structure of a poem.
6.Biology. mode of organization; construction and arrangement oftissues, parts, or organs.
7.Geology.
a. the attitude of a bed or stratum or of beds or strata of sedimentaryrocks, as indicated by the dip and stri
ke.
b. the coarser composition of a rock, as contrasted with its texture.
I would say that the fourth definition is the closest to the musical term. I would say that because it is
overall close to the actual definition in music.

Actual musical definition: The overall plan of a piece of music. For example Rondo ABACA, Ternary ABA
Vagabond
I would say that this piece of music was written in the form of rondo. I would think this because I heard
lots of alternations meaning I heard one A piece then a B piece then the same A piece then a C then it
came back to a A part
Reflections
I would say that this piece of music was written in the form of rondo. I would think this because I heard

Melody
The word melody has originally come from melos in greek meaning song. A couple of years later it has
become meloidia in greek and latin then to become melodie in old French. After those transformations
it has finalley become Melody (meaning sweet music). The word melody started to start and become
popular before the 19th century.
The Noun melody has 4 meanings
1. : musical sounds in agreeable succession or arrangement.
2. A:the succession of single tones in musical compositions, asdistinguished from harmony and
rhythm.
B: the principal part in a harmonic composition; the air.
C: a rhythmical succession of single tones producing a distinct musicalphrase or idea.
3. :a poem suitable for singing.
4.: intonation, as of a segment of connected speech.

I would say that number 2 is the most related to the actual musical definition because at first there is
music in the definition and it is close to the actual definition
The actual musical definition: The effect created by combining a variety of pitches and notes. Example
step, skips, leaps

Vagabond
In this piece of music when the pitch of the song increases leaps start to occurt due to the change of the
major chords. However, when the tone is at a freuquent level skips start to occur. In this piece halfway
throughout the song steps are noticibale it sounds as if the instruments and vocals are lowering by 2
semi tones each beat. So in this case skips, steps and leaps occur
Reflections
In this piece of music, overall skips can be heard when the vocalist and instruments change notes at the
counts of beats. Steps are also noticeable in this piece when the singer sings a high note then loweres
the pitch to fit in with the instruments.
Coffins
In relation to the song reflection by MisterWives both songs share the fact that skips and steps can be
heard. In relation in this piece of music, overall skips can be heard when the vocalist and instruments
change notes at the counts of beats. Steps are also noticeable in this piece when the singer sings a high
note then loweres the pitch to fit in with the instruments.

Metre
The word metre originates from Metron in Greek meaning measure. Then it transposed into metrum in
latin, to metre in old French. Finally after evolving it became meter
This word has 4 defenitions
1. :a metric unit of length equal to approximately 1.094 yards
2. :the basic SI unit of length; the length of the path travelled by light infree space during a
time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second. In1983 this definition replaced the previous
one based on krypton-

86,which in turn had replaced the definition based on the platinumiridiummetre bar kept in Paris
3. :(prosody) the rhythmic arrangement of syllables in verse, usuallyaccording to the numb
er and kind of feet in a line
4. : (music) another word (esp US) for time (sense 22)

I would sayu number 4 defenition is most popular because it has the music caracteristics involved in the
defenitoin and it is close to the defeniton
The exact musical definition: The musical definition is the number of beats in a bar, example , 4/4, etc.

Vagabond
I would say that the piece vagabond has a metre of 4/4. Meaning tere are 4 quarter notes in a whole
measure meaning a bar. I indentified this by listening thourogughly to the piece continuously until I
found the correct meter in my opinion.
Reflection
I would say that the piece Reflection has a meter of , Meaning there are 3 quarter notes in a wwhole
measure. I indentified this by listening thourogughly to the piece continuously until I found the correct
meter in my opinion.
Coffins
I would say that this oiece is written in 6/4 time. Meaning there are 6 quarter notes in a whole measure.
I indentified this by listening thourogughly to the piece continuously until I found the correct meter in
my opinion.
