PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson

Set up stations in the foyer and make sure that the smartboard works for the
introduction.
Write agendas on the board, have one student tell Mrs. Bookers class that they will
need a pencil and an eraser. Meet in Ms. Kubiks room for a smartboard activity.

Review Activity (Elements of Geography):

Smartboard activity where students must match the picture with the
correct definition.
We will ensure that everyone knows what each of the pictures means
so that there is no confusion during stations about what were
learning.
Pose the question: why might it be important for us to be learning
about Albertas geography?

Introduction to Rocky Mountains:
Explain how the Rocky Mountains were formed. Show a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kte1ZCqASR0.
Talk about the location of the Rocky Mountains. Show students a map
of Alberta, and point to where the Rocky Mountains are.
Explanation of the stations and expectations:
Review expectations for group work (synergy).
Go over specific instructions for each station and what they will be
learning at each station (station specifics can be found in the body of
this lesson plan).
Hand out worksheets and separate into groups, having each group
start at a different station.

assessment

Time

Station One (Landforms): Students will read the information at the

station, and label on their worksheet where a valley is and where a
mountain is. They will then write down (in text boxes) what are some
things that can be found in those areas (such as communities in valleys,
and animals on the mountains). All answers can be found in the
information provided at the station.

Station Two (Bodies of Water): Students will read through the

information at the station, and complete the corresponding activity,
which involves moving different bodies of water to different places on
a picture of a mountain to create a pathway of how water from a
glacier melts and forms other bodies of water. On their worksheet,
they will draw pictures on a mountain of each of the bodies of water
and label them.

Station Three (Natural Resources): A laptop will be set up with a video.

Students will read through the information, and watch the video. They
will then answer the questions on the worksheet. The video is: https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDgifQ0FDQ0

25 minutes

Station Four (Vegetation): Students will read through the information

and complete the corresponding activity which involves placing
different types of vegetation onto a mountain where students think
they would be located. Students must duplicate these results on their
worksheet, drawing arrows from the pictures of the vegetation to
where they think the vegetation should go on the mountain.

Station Five (Climate): Students will read through the information at

the station, and then label the pictures in their workbook with what
season they think each picture represents. They will then answer the
questions for this station.

Station Six (Animal Life): Students will read through the information
and then match each picture of an animal with its name. On the back
of each animal will be some interesting facts about it. Students can
then answer the questions for this station on their worksheet.
Closure

Time

Students will hand in their worksheets so that we can mark them

over the weekend to see what we need to spend most of our time
talking about on Monday.
