1) Read through both quotes, and decide whether you think the quote best
represents the government model of Ancient Sparta or Ancient Athens.
2) Underline the sentence/phrase which best exemplifies either Spartan or Athenian
values and explain why that sentence is important.
3) Finally take a guess at which historical figure said it.
Quotation 1:
The fundamental theme through all the centuries has been the principle that force and
power are the determining factors. All development is struggle. Only force rules. Force is
the first law. . . . Only through struggle have countries and the world become great. If
one should ask whether this struggle is gruesome, then the only answer could befor
the weak, yes, for humanity as a whole, no. Instead of everlasting struggle, the world
preaches cowardly, and everlasting peace. These three things, considered in the light of

Directions: Classify each of the following scenarios as either m utualism , com m ensalism , and
parasitism .
1. Barnacles create home sites by attaching themselves to whales.

2. Ticks feed on deer blood to the deers detriment.

3. The stork uses its saw-like bill to cut up the dead animals it eats. As a result, the dead
animals carcass is accessible to some bees for food and egg laying.

4. Ostriches and gazelles feed next to each other. They both watch for predators and alert
each other to danger. Since the visual abilities of the two species are different, they each
can identify threats the other animal would not as readily see.

5. Yucca flowers are pollinated by yucca moths. The moths lay their eggs in the flowers
where the larvae hatch and eat some of the developing seeds. Both species benefit.

6. Hermit crabs live in shells made and then abandoned by snails.

7. A cuckoo may lay its eggs in a warblers nest. The cuckoos young will displace the
warblers young and will be raised by the warbler.
