January 2015 Monthly Overview For Parents

Teacher: Mr. Jones

Grade: 6

Dear Parents,
For the month of January, 2015 our grade 6 class will be studying
the following things in English Language Arts, English Social Studies,
English Science and English Math.
English
Language Arts

-Writing: The students will be expected to do a


variety of different writing activities during
January. These will include, journal writing,
essay writing and poetry.
Reading: At the end of January a new novel
(The Westing Game) will be given to the
students. We will be studying the novel using
literature circles, which the students will be
learning about in language arts class.
-Daily Reading log and weekly reading
summaries.
-Journal Writing: Students will continue to
write weekly journals about a variety of topics.
-Spelling: We will continue with our weekly
spelling and sentence quiz. We will be working
on units 14-17 from the spelling book. These
will be covered during our Monday spelling
class and our weekly quiz will be on Fridays.

English Social
Studies

Sharing the Wealth: Students will investigate the


challenge of unequal distribution of wealth in the
world. The country we will focus on will be India. We
will learn about the concept of GNP per capita and
identify high-, middle-, and low-income nations
around the world.
Projects: Begin the Buy Nothing Challenge project
and organize a Buy Nothing Challenge to the
school.

English Science

Electricity
Atoms: Students will learn about what atoms
are. They will also learn in detail about the
different parts of an atom.
Electricity: The students will learn about the
two types of electricity this month (static and
current). We will be conducting experiments in
class and in the science lab using circuits,
balloons, batteries and lights as ways to show
the students how electricity works.

English
Mathematics

-Important Vocabulary: atom, electron,


proton, neutron, nucleus, current, circuit, static,
voltage, conductor, generator
-Cumulative Review of Units 1-3
We will be reviewing the main concepts that
have been covered so far in Math 6. We will be
doing this through worksheets, review games
and a textbook review.
Angles and Polygons: We will be starting to
learn about different angles and polygons in
January. This includes naming, measuring and
comparing.
**Students will need a protractor in math
class throughout January**
Vocabulary: acute angle, obtuse angle, reflex
angle, straight angle, reflex angle, right angle
