POETRY PORTFOLIO

ENGLISH 11 POETRY UNIT

AUTHORS NOTE/ARTIST STATEMENT

Author's notes are just that -- notes from
the author about the text. They introduce
the text, describe its composition
processes, and lay the groundwork for
response from the reader (peers and/or
the instructor). Depending on how you'd
like to use them, which might vary from
assignment to assignment, author's notes
might be anywhere from two paragraphs
to a page and a half in length.

AUTHORS NOTE/ARTIST STATEMENT

Give relevant background information, explain
your choices, talk about your discoveries or
what made you excited, and point out things
you think I might misssuch as connections
between poems.
Yours only have to be a paragraph or two
(approximately 100-200 words) about your
writing process, why you chose the poems you
did, and the analysis process.
This shows me your learning process for the
poetry unit

ANALYSIS

Each analysis has three parts:

1. The Poem (a printed copy in your
project portfolio)
2. The step by step analysis you
performed (if applicable)
3. Paragraph of analysis

POETIC ANALYSIS PARAGRAPH(S)

This is exactly the same thing you have been doing
for Lord of the Flies, but simply in one paragraph
where you analyse a shorter piece of text and
include only one or two references to the poem
We are reinforcing your ability to do the following:
Read for detail
Analyse text(s)(now with a different form of text)
Communicate clearly
Use quotations and evidence in your writing
(these are the important and transferrable skills
from English into different classes and disciplines)

POETIC ANALYSIS PARAGRAPH(S)

Follow the PEET paragraph format, and use dress ups
from the Stylistic Techniques handout, where quality of
the written analysis is inviting, informative, engaging,
and thought-provoking.
The development of each written analysis is enhanced
by appropriate details and information, including:
at least one (1) direct reference to the poem, which
has been cited correctly using quotation marks and
identifying the line number of the poem and
at least one (1) reference to a poetic device found
within the poem
a statement about the meaning/theme/purpose of
the poem

FOR EXAMPLE
In his poem, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, William
Butler Yeats uses imagery to communicate the
importance of peace and quiet for a balanced
life. By using words like glimmer and glow (910), the reader sees that this lake isle is visually
appealing to the speaker. He contrasts that with
the grey pavement (13) of the city to show why
he might want to escape to a lake. For when he
writes that he shall have some peace there (5)
Yeats clearly expresses the desire for peace and
balance in his life full of city streets.
