How to use this booklet


You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

The idea for my Skittles animation is to use the Skittles to make clips of old school
and retro games. The games that will feature will start with Pac man, then move on
to Snake and end on Brick Breaker.
It will start with someone walking into a room towards a sofa then as they sit down it
will show them using their old Nokia phone. When they sit down they are about to
start playing games on their phone, then to make it more effect it will zoom into the
screen and have the screen full size to have the games. This will look as if they are
still playing as if the person is using the phone, however it will all be made out of
skittles.
As the games change the colours change. I am going to use the original packet
however also use more recently released flavoured and colours such as the Soured
Skittles. Original will be used at the start for snake, sour skittles for pac-man and
then ending on tropical for brick breaker.
For my advert also I am going to use old school game music from the specific game
such as the chomp and munch sounds from Snake.

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?


I will meet the requirements of my brief as I am pleased with the brief I chose and the
negotiations I made to make it better and more my style. I will make it to all the criteria
given in the brief, such as the length and content of the advert being for Skittle and
appealing to Skittle lovers. The advert will be 30 seconds long and feature the logo at the
end, this is what the brief requires. Also I will have music commercially available music as
well as the sounds used in the original games.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
I shouldnt encounter any health and safety during the production of this animation.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
Some of the legal issues I may have when producing this will be the sounds, I will have to
contact either the music company/label to make sure I am not violating any copyright laws.
I may also have to do this for any sounds I want to use in case they are also owned by the
company who produced the games.

Why are you using that particular format?


I am going to use stop-frame techniques as I think that will work best for the animation I want
to make and also as it will be the easiest way to create the effect I want. I want my animation
to feel as retro and old school as I can, I think this will be the best way to do this as it will
look effective and go in nicely with the retro feel.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
With stop animations there are many possibilities you can explore as there arent many
limitations or problems with ideas or the production. One of the main possibilities you can
use and one that I think works really well is the idea of making ordinary objects come to life.
This is something you can explore to think of ways of creating a character and movement
through ordinary objects, such as furniture.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
The limitations and problems that I could potentially face is keeping the set and Skittles on
the same place to continue filming over a couple of days. Although it is a simpler way of
creating animations on a low budget and make them look effective one of the problems or
obstacle I may come across is the copy right laws. I will need to contact skittles and ask for
permission to use them and do the same for all the sounds and music to do the same.

What will the subject of your animation be?
My animation will be a T.V advert for Skittles. Everything in the advert will be made out of
skittles with the different flavours and colours.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
The storyline of my animation is to take you back to your childhood and show you all the
retro games you used to play but make them out of Skittles. To do this I am going to use all
the different flavours and colours, this will make a good advert as it will show the varieties of
Skittles and advertise the different flavours and diversity of them.

How are you going to make your characters move?


I am going to make my characters of Skittles move by slightly moving each one with my
hands to make the illusion when each photo is put together of a swift movement.

What is the purpose of an armature?


The purpose of an armature is to make it easier to maneuver characters made out of
products such as plastacine. Armatures are made out of wire to act a skeleton to keep the
model together and easier to move. Without an armature the model of clay or plasticine will
be weaker and therefore it will be hard to move, also armatures are very useful when
keeping the same position of the character to make the photo taking process quicker.

Will you use them for your characters?


I will not be using an armature for my characters as my characters (Skittles) do not involve a
plasticine or clay models, they are what they are going to be.

Audio and Soundtrack


What audio will you have for your animation?

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

I will ensure that my animation will suit my audience by making it fun and exciting. I want it to
keep them interested and flow well to take them through three old school games. I think this
will suit my target audience of a range of people because the style is very in nowadays with
retro and vintage things coming back into fashion.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number


To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
