Outcome

I can
~Define important Genetic terms
~Summarize the work of Gregor Mendel &
his pea plants
~Define and give examples of alleles
~Relate the terms allele and gene
~Use a punnett square to predict the
outcome of a monohybrid cross.

I can
~Use letters of the alphabet to write genotypes
and describe them as homozygous or
heterozygous.
~Compare and contrast genotype and
phenotype.

Strategy:Review for vocabulary quiz- Bump
Game
Purpose: Students review and define
vocabulary terms for genetics unit

Strategy:Vocabulary Assessment
Purpose: Assess student comprehension
of genetics key terms.
Following quiz- Chunk genetics notesstudents illustrate understanding of text
using annotations- students read on
their own and underline main idea.
Students then work in groups
compare/share their ideas with others
in the group. Each group will give one
main idea for class discussion with copy

Lab participation
Bellringer and exit slip

Strategy: Bellringer
Review prior knowledge- have students do
practice punnett square and review with each
other within their group. Each group will then
put their answer on the board for the class to
compare. Using whiteboard app and ipad.
Strategy: Dragon Genetics ASIM lab
Purpose: Students will integrae new
information with prior knowledge while
reading and creating annotations within the
chunk of text- students read on their own and
underline main idea. Students then work in
groups compare/share their ideas with others
in the group. Each group will give one main
idea for class discussion with copy of the text
on the elmo and projector.

Review for test on Mendel and punnett

squares.

Strategy: Partial unit test

Purpose: Formally assess student
knowledge.

Homework

1.

Vocabulary was due today- may

turn in late (10 points deducted
per day) for chapter 11 section 13.
2. Students given genetics booklet
with notes and practice questionsstudents to read and complete pg
198-200. Given time to complete
at the end of class- they are to
finish what they did not complete
today.
3. Dragon was due today- if they did
not complete in class on Friday it
was to be completed and turned
in today.

Exit: Disorder Detectives karyotype labstudents create a karyotype to match a genetic

disorder- case studies are then explained
through powerpoint and statistics for each
genetic disorder are given. Students will
complete their own individual karyotype and
identify the disorder presented.

Strategy: Anticipation Guide:

Purpose: set purpose for homework text
reading, activate prior knowledge on blood
typing and sex linked traits, help students
make connections with the text.

1. Unit Assessment Friday. Study for test.

2. Finish genetics booklet 198-206. Due
Friday.

Reading text1. Read through the first time for

review of material
2. Reread carefully making notes for
main ideas, key terms
3. Summarize main idea for each
paragraph of the text
4. Give a reason for each annotationwhy did you underline that
particular piece of text? Why did
you highlight that key term?
