Step 1Desired Results

6 Number & Operation

Understand the concept of ratio and its relationship to fractions and to the multiplication and division of whole
numbers. Use ratios to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Multiply and divide decimals, fractions and mixed numbers; solve real-world and mathematical problems using
arithmetic with positive rational numbers.
6.1.3.3 Calculate the percent of a number and determine what percent one number is of another number to solve
problems in various contexts.
6.1.3.4 Solve real-world and mathematical problems requiring arithmetic with decimals, fractions and mixed numbers.
6.1.3.5 Estimate solutions to problems with whole numbers, fractions and decimals and use the estimates to assess the
reasonableness of results in the context of the problem.
Given the instruction and information relating to decimals, fractions, and percentages and how they relate
to each other, sixth grade students will be able to use decimals, fractions, and percentages in mathematical
relationships at least 85% correctly and apply them in real-world situations.
Step 2Assessment Evidence
1) Entrance Quiz What existing knowledge base do my students have regarding decimals, fractions,
and percents?
2) Worksheets and study guide containing decimal/fraction/percent conversion wheel
3) Class discussion and participation
4) Student Journal this should contain any questions regarding the lesson or that days activities.
Time will be given at the end of each class period for journal entries.
5) Student Portfolio turned in the middle of and at the end of the unit. Journal will contain (at a
minimum) class notes, worksheets with corrections, completed study guide, student journal with
any questions or comments regarding the unit.
6) Video study guide and problems to be done at home.
7) In class activity centered around the at home video.
8) Final Test

Step 3Learning Plan

1) Entrance Quiz will be used to establish the students prior knowledge of percents, decimals, and
fractions and their relations to each other.. This will be checked by the instructor, but will not be
counted as part of the overall grade.
2) Instructor will provide the students with a video link to be watched at home. The video will also
have a study guide that will need to be completed as they watch the video. Throughout the video,
students will be asked questions and given the opportunity to answer in their study guide. The
study guide will be will be included in the individual students math portfolio.
3) In Class Activity: Students will be required to watch the at home video entitled Shopping Spree!
prior to this activity. They will need to fill in their video study guide with prices and sale
percentages if applicable. They will have determined which store has the better deal for 5-7
Christmas Present items. In class, the students will be shown (or given) ads containing alternative
prices or sales on each of these items. They will need to determine as a group which prices are better
and by how much
4) Class discussion and questions will be encouraged but if a student is uncomfortable asking
questions in class, they can include it in their journal and talk to the teacher about it individually.
5) Students will keep a journal and be given 5 minutes at the end of each math class to write in it. The
journal will be evaluated in one-on-one meetings with each student half way through the unit and it
will be turned in at the end of the unit. This journal should be used for questions about the days
lesson, thoughts regarding how they are going to complete the projects and homework, and any
opinions or discussion topics they would like to bring up. Students will be encouraged to reference
this in class for discussion time and Q&A time.
6) The students will also compile a portfolio that will contain the following at a minimum:
1.Completed video study guide. 2. Questions they would like answered by the instructor (these can
be taken from journal entries) 3. In class activity calculations) 4. Worksheet packet with any
corrections, whether completed individually or with a partner/group. Student portfolios will be
collected the Thursday before the final test and returned on Friday for review. The final test will be
the following Monday.

Grading:
1) Portfolio 10%
2) Journal 10%
3) Class participation in discussion and games 20%
4) Worksheets 10%
5) Video Activity and Study guide 30%
6) Final test 20%
