Natural Disasters
Thesis Statement
We, the Mastermindz, believe that it is important to help the victims of
natural disasters and support them in any way possible. Help us prepare people for
disasters to prevent them from getting injured.

The Issue
We are the Mastermindz, with a Z *snaps fingers*, and we are here to tell you
about our plan to lower the fatalities and injuries caused by natural disasters. The
whole world is affected by many different disasters. A natural disaster can happen
anytime and anywhere in the world. Natural disasters have always been a problem
in the world. Each part of the world is affected by different natural disasters
because of the difference in climate and region. The growth of temperature
increases the chances of storms because when water vapor evaporates in the
atmosphere it becomes the fuel for future natural
disasters. Lets go back to three years ago On
March 11, 2011 Japan was hit by a tremendous
earthquake with a magnitude of 9 on the richter
scale. This unleashed a destructive tsunami to form
and attack the country of Japan. There were over
18,000 deaths and $309 billion dollars in damage.
This is a big problem because the destruction from
the tsunami could take years to repair.

Natural Disasters
Some

of these include:
earthquakes
typhoons
tsunamis
wildfires
tornadoes
Many of these are life threatening which is why we need to be cautious and
plan ahead. According to Disaster Survival Resources, approximately 258 million

people are affected by natural disasters every year, which is why we thought of
solutions to prepare for these unforeseen events.
As we travel around the world, there are different natural disasters occurring
according to the region of the place. For example, since we live near the San
Andreas Fault in California, it is more
prone to earthquakes than places
like Florida. From 1974-2003, the
state with the most earthquakes
with a 3.5 magnitude or greater, is
Alaska: 12,053. The second state
with the most earthquakes is
California: 4,895. Florida is 45th
with 0 earthquakes with a 3.5 or
more magnitude. You see, Florida
would have more hurricanes since
they are surrounded by warm ocean water. Many regions are built differently to help
prevent the natural disasters from causing huge destruction. In addition, if some
region is more prone to floods then they will have more man-made solutions than
other places that are more likely to have wildfires. To prevent from being injured
from a natural disaster you should think about the natural disasters that affect your
region.

Solutions
There are many ways to prepare for
natural disasters:
Large man made hills can
help when a flood strikes
Underground city bunkers
and tunnels to shelter people
from tornadoes, hurricanes,
and large storms.
Large concrete walls on the coasts to prevent tsunamis
Strong Foundations for your house
so when an earthquake comes,
your house wont collapse
Those are just some ways to avoid
injuries/deaths during and after natural
disasters.

Methods Currently Used

Natural disasters are inevitable events that naturally occur.

However, there are many ways to prepare for them. Different disasters
have different emergency evacuations and ways to stay safe.
According to Ready.gov, in order to prepare for these situations, you
should build a basic emergency kit with the following items:
Water for drinking/sanitation
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered radio and a Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra
batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First Aid kit
A whistle to signal for help
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
In addition, every family should choose an emergency place to meet in the
event of a natural disaster. By creating a plan and staying informed on the situation,
you are more likely to stay calm. Another way currently used to prepare for natural
disasters is that we are able to predict how long the natural disaster will hit and how
far out it is. Many natural disasters are able to be predicted, but sometimes they
happen out of nowhere and you could never have seen it coming. For instance, you
cannot predict a real flash flood. Although there are ways to predict it, there will be
times when flash floods come without warning and wipe out everything. Though
people believe that scientists cant predict big weather occurrences they can predict
natural disasters that will take place later in the future. For example, scientists use
the data from seismographs in the past to predict where the future earthquakes are
most likely to occur. They also take account of the pressure that is building along
the fault lines.

Publication
There are many ways to publicize this problem which includes using:
advertisements on television
internet (Yahoo!, Facebook, or YouTube)
newspapers
magazines
billboards
This way people can know about these problems and
help donate or give ideas to help people with the damage after
the natural disasters. By advertising how dangerous natural

disasters are, people can finally realize how serious the topic on natural disasters
are. On the internet people can read online articles, blogs, and other websites about
how to stay safe throughout a natural disaster. Also, people can read newspapers
and magazine to keep up to date and how to help people who are in need. On
billboards people driving can see the problem and see where they can look to find
out where they can help. Billboards may cost on average around $1700. Internet
ads vary depending on what site you are using. A Facebook log-out advertisement
costs around $100,000 while a Yahoo! homepage takeover costs $450,000.
Newspaper advertisements cost a little less, about $200 - $20,000 depending on
the size of the content and the publication. Magazines are similar to newspapers;
they vary depending on whether the publication is local or national. Some
magazines charge up to $500,000 to buy the inside covers!
But, in order to help spread the word and prevent injuries from natural
disasters, we need your help. We are asking for approximately a hundred million
dollars to spread the word about how to stay safe, to prevent people from getting
injured and to build shelters in places that get hit by a lot of natural disasters. The
money will also go towards publicizing
the procedures and raising awareness.
In addition, itll talk about how bad
natural disasters can be so then people
will take the issue more seriously. Most
citizens have no idea how many people
lose their lives and homes to natural
disasters, until they have experienced it
themselves. But by advertising the
issue, people will become more aware of
the natural disasters and find ways help
stop it from harming people.
Thank you for listening to our speech, and hopefully you will now realize how
solemn the issue of natural disasters actually are. Brought to you by: The
