BUS 1040 Term Project Observation - Size Discrimination in the Fashion
Industry

How does the term project connect with your other classes?
I completed two term projects because I have strong interest in both topics and I felt that
one would just be too easy. As far as their connection with my other class, Business Law,
my projects really dont have much correlation. My primary topic for discussion is size
discrimination in the fashion industry and the effect it has on the public. My secondary
project is about the causes and effects of bullying.
How does your term project connect with what you do outside of school?
Both topics I completed projects about are very connected with my personal life and
activities I participate in outside of school. The activity I have the most passion for is
bodybuilding. My personal perception of what an ideal body looks like has been created
by what I have seen in the media and effects my self-perception and self-esteem daily.
Bullying is something that I feel has an impact on everyone in some way or another.
Whether it is the act of bullying, being bullied or innocently witnessing bullying,
everyone has a connection to bullying.
Both these topics are of relevant interest to me and are important to be because I want
to be comfortable in my own skin with no regard to outside judgment of my appearance.
By educating myself and forming conclusions on these topics, I have been able to build
my own safety wall against becoming susceptible to the deceiving messages of the
fashion industry, the media, and the negative impacts of bullying.
How does it connect with what you have learned in ethics?
Both of my project topics are deeply connected with ethics. The advertisers and owners
of fashion industry companies must consider the public as their ethical claimants
because the messages they disseminate to the public have an effect on the personal
perceptions of those individuals. By discriminating against certain audiences, it can be
concluded that those decision makers in the fashion industry are not behaving ethically.
When it comes to bullying, there are many parties that are ethically responsible. Most
commonly, people consider the bully to be the one committing the fault. And while that
may be true, another party to hold ethically responsible would be anyone who sees
bullying happening or is aware of its occurrence and does nothing about it. For that
matter, all parties involved in bullying must be held responsible for their decisions.
