Focus Question:
Why did Islam split into
two major branches?

I Aint Mad Atcha

Start at 1:58

Schism
When

Muhammad died, Muslims disagreed

about who should be chosen to be the
leader of the community.
Sunni
Wanted successor to be chosen from
Muhammads community of followers.
Shiite
Wanted the leadership to stay in the
family.

Distribution of Sunni and Shiite

Muslims?

Sunni Majority
New

leader to be the Caliph.

Caliph Head of State.

Shiites

do not recognize the Caliph.

Instead they chose Muhammads
son in law, Ali, as their new Iman.
Iman Head of state.

Struggle for Power

Early

on most of the Shiite Imans met

violent ends at the hands of the Sunni
Caliphs.
Iman Alis son Hussein was
beheaded.
This date is still considered a
holiday for Shiite Muslims.
Conflict is more about power, politics,
and retribution than actual religion.

Iraq
Before

Sadam Hussein, Iraq was run by an

oppressive Shiite regime.
Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq was run by an
oppressive Sunni regime.
After Saddam Hussein, Iraq was once again
run by an oppressive Shiite regime.
Isis
Oppressive Sunni militant group.
The aim of ISIS is to create an Islamic state across
Sunni areas of Iraq and in Syria.

Sunni and Shiite

When

talking about Militant Jihadists or Terrorist

networks it is inaccurate and inappropriate to use
Sunni and Shiite to describe these groups.
What you really are talking about are groups
called Isis or Al-Qaeda.
To

use Sunni and Shiite to describe these

groups is including billions of people who are
not even involved and who most likely do not
share the beliefs of these fringe organizations.

Sufis
In

both Sunni and Shiite branches of Islam.

Muslim mystics who sought communication
with God through meditation, fasting, and
other rituals.
*Mystic A person who seeks divine wisdom
and spiritual truth.
Like

Christian monks, Sufis helped spread Islam

by traveling, preaching, and being good
examples to others.

Malcolm X
After Malcolm X made the Hajj to Mecca:
There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world.
They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black-skinned
Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual
displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences
in America had led me to believe never could exist between the
white and the non-white... America needs to understand Islam,
because this is the one religion that erases from its society the
race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have
met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America
would have been considered white -- but the "white" attitude
was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have
never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by
all colors together, irrespective of their color.
*Malcolm X speeches are sampled in tons of rap music.
