Portfolio Reflection
Throughout the trials and tribulations of both completing a portfolio and being a
student enrolled in UWRT 1101 much can be said, in great detail. Standing in the shoes
of an eighteen year old girl beginning her first semester at college can be intimidating. As
the semester flew by, the word literacy was woven and spoken about a number of times
both in class and out of class. As a student in this particular class, I realized that the word
literacy has a meaning that was unknown to me. Literacy is knowledge that relates to
a specified subject. Creating a grade A portfolio can be viewed as literacy in the way of
the number of steps it takes to create, how to make it visually appealing, easy to use and
contain the correct information. All while one is adjusting to college life, being enrolled
in a college level writing class and in the end perfecting a portfolio worth a large part of
their overall grade, reflective pieces and notes can flow freely.
Maturing as a person can come in stages. In regards to college life, I have noticed
that I have matured as a student. With my studies, I have learned how to manage my time
and balance the social aspect in regards to maintaining above average grades. In high
school, I would merely receive an assignment and be given more than enough time to
turn it in. However in college I have had to juggle six different assignments along with
staying involved in my sorority and saving time to remain a mentally sane individual. I
have learned that the best route to take in completing assignments is to complete them the
day that they are assigned so procrastination is not a factor. My mom once told me if
something can be completed within ten minutes, do it right then. Dealing with
enrollment into UWRT 1101 and making the transition from a high school student to a

college student, came the gift of learning how to write a paper fast and accurately. In high
school, I struggled with putting my thoughts onto paper but in college I have been forced
to type out what I am thinking and sort out all of my thoughts.
Starting in early December, the assignment of a portfolio fell upon freshmen all
across campus. The dreaded rubric consisted of multiple assignments, required hours of
work and demanded the attention of students. Figuratively standing at the bottom of the
mountain and viewing the top, as turning in the final portfolio was a tough view to look
at. Initially, I sat down with the rubric and started to check off the assignments I already
had completed. Once the assignments had begun to pile up and demanded my Microsoft
Word to stay open for hours on end, I made the decision to figure out Weebly and
navigate my way to an A. Once the Weebly began, I realized that I would have to teach
myself and solely find my own path. Weebly is the type of website that resembles a blank
canvas and allows students to take it in any direction. By forming the portfolio came the
challenges
