Previous Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge (Theory)

Skills (Practice)

Students have a variety of projects

completed in Materials Technology Wood.
Students have used all the basic hand tools.
Have completed a dovetail joint box before
Christmas.
Students have completed a portfolio for
their previous project.
Students explored the theory of trees,
wood structure, timber
softwood/hardwood and seasoning,
diseases and defects

Planning timber.
Sawing accurately.
Chiselling: vertical & horizontal.
Constructing dovetail joints.
Sketching.
Laminating.

Rationale
The reason I have chosen to continue with the design process in this class is:
According to my co-operating teacher this class have completed a number of projects to date but have
never gone through the actual design process of producing a piece of work. He told me that they have
gone through sketching and explaining the construction process. I believe it would be good practice, for
their junior cert next year, to complete a project from design brief stage to working drawings stage at
this stage.
NOTE: this project will not be the same project they complete during practical class due to time
constraints.

Aims
The aims of this lesson are to:

Get to know the students.

Lay down some ground rules with the students which will apply while I am teaching them.
Recap on completion of tea box, completed before Christmas.
Encourage a democracy within the class which will in turn create a positive working
environment.
Introduce students to the new topic of the design process.
Introduce design brief.
Teach the students about good design and the design process.

Literacy
Strategies
Spell checks.
Annotation of
drawings.
Flash cards.
Anagrams.
At the end of class I
intend on giving out
the homework for
that night. Students
will have to provide
suggestions for key
words associated
with the given
homework.
Students will then
have to include
these words in their
answers.

Numeracy
Strategies
Mathematical
calculations.
Dimensioning.
Object
measurements.
When presenting
drawing
measurements will
be left out for
students to work out
themselves.
