following a standard format for citation.

Procedures/Instructional Strategies
Beginning Room Arrangement:
Students will be arranged around a conference table, with the projector screen at the head.
1. [10 mins.] Opening to lesson: Citation Review
I will ask them to take a moment and think about their past education on citations.
What do you know about them?
I will put the following example on the board and ask them if they agree with the
authors citation. If not, they have to fix it.
Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left AfricanAmericans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
Many of these students will know the answer to these questions, but it will clue the
students in to the purpose of this particular page of an essay. We will have a brief
discussion on the following:

o What is plagiarism?
o How do we reference other peoples work without plagiarizing?
o What is a Works Cited page/Bibliography?
o What are some other uses for this page of an essay?
2. [15 mins.] Step 1: Introduction to MLA Citations
I will go through a PowerPoint that briefly covers frequently used citations.
o This PowerPoint will detail how to cite a book and format parenthetical citations.
The parenthetical citation portion will also cover how to format a block quotes.
o Along with examples of each citation, there will be a non-example.
3. [20 mins.] Step 2: Practice
I will handout the citation worksheets for the students to practice citing quotations
both on a Works Cited page and in text citations.
The first part of this worksheet will give the information needed to construct a
citation; the students will have to place the information correctly, with a model for
guidance. Then they will be provided a quotation from Oedipus the King that they
will have to cite.
On the second part of the worksheet, they will be given a citation
4. [5 mins] Closure: Connection to Commentaries
Collect the worksheets for grading
I will remind them that their Hamlet commentaries require a lot of citations and, now
that we have gone over citations, I expect that they will utilize this information.
Methods of Assessment:
[How will you know if the intended learning occurred?] List all methods of assessment used in
this lesson or which are related to this lesson and come in a future lesson. After each assessment,
indicate in brackets the number(s) and letter(s) of the unit objective and the related lesson
objectives that the assessment is evaluating.
Students will demonstrate their prior knowledge by fixing the MLK Jr. citation at the beginning
of the class period. When compared to their performance on the practice worksheet at the end of
the class period, student learning will be apparent.
Differentiated Instruction to accommodate one or more of my students:
The worksheet will be available electronically and on paper.
